Barefoot Cape Verde singer and Grammy-winner Cesaria Evora dies at age 70

LISBON, Portugal — Cesaria Evora, who started singing as a teenager in the bayside bars of Cape Verde in the 1950s and won a Grammy in 2003 after she took her African islands music to stages across the world, died Saturday. She was 70. Evora, known as the “Barefoot Diva” because she always performed without shoes, died in the Baptista de Sousa Hospital in Mindelo, on her native island of Sao Vicente in Cape Verde, her label Lusafrica said in a statement on its website. Herman Cain, the long-shot Republican presidential candidate turned frontrunner, has done just about everything wrong since news broke Sunday night that his former employer had paid two women to settle sexual harassment complaints against him. Cain denied it. He said the women didn’t understand his humor . He said his accusers fabricated the charges. He said he couldn’t remember the details, then suddenly he could . He said he had no knowledge of the settlement, then suddenly recalled some details, which turned out to be vastly understated. He publicly predicted more allegations would surface. SHANGHAI — A staff member slashed children with a knife at a daycare center for migrant workers in eastern China on Monday, wounding eight children, one seriously. The attack took place at noon at an informal daycare center in Shanghai’s suburban Minhang district, home to many migrant workers. The female attacker was taken into custody and police were investigating, said Zhuang Liqiang, an officer in the information services department of the Shanghai Public Security Bureau. NEW DELHI — A prominent anti-corruption activist who had announced plans to go on an indefinite hunger strike to demand tougher anti-corruption laws was detained early Tuesday morning, police said. Anna Hazare had said that he would start fasting Tuesday and would gather along with supporters in a public park in New Delhi despite police denying him permission to do so. MILFORD, N.H. — Former Minnesota governor Tim Pawlenty said Thursday that, as president, he would sign a highly contentious Republican plan to overhaul Medicare — but only if no other proposals made it out of Congress. Pawlenty, who officially kicked off his presidential campaign on Monday and has been touring the nation with stops in Iowa, Florida, Washington and New Hampshire, went further than he has in previous appearances in which he has praised the “courage” and “leadership” of U.S. Rep.
