Alexandria board halts waterfront redevelopment plan

Alexandria’s Board of Zoning Appeals halted the city’s waterfront redevelopment plan early Friday by a 4-2 vote, ruling that a protest petition by the plan’s opponents had been wrongly denied. City attorney Jim Banks immediately said the city would appeal to the Circuit Court. The petition, had it been accepted in January, would have forced the City Council to pass the waterfront plan by a “super-majority” vote. Being bilingual may delay dementia

A fascinating paper published Thursday in the April issue of the journal Trends in Cognitive Sciences suggests that being bilingual may slow the development of dementia among older adults. In a review of research on the cognitive effects of communicating in more than one language, psychologists led by Ellen Bialystok of the University of York in Toronto found that while the brain-health benefit of bilingualism among adults is “muted,” among older people it becomes more pronounced. For instance, a study of older people with dementia found that those who were bilingual showed symptoms of dementia about three to four years later than those who communicated in a single language — at about at 78.6 for bilingual subjects versus 75.4 for monolingual people. A second study of people with Alzheimer’s disease, a form of dementia, showed similar results, the paper reports. Read full article > >
