Political endorsements don’t mean a lot — unless you’re Donald Trump

Wednesday, December 28th, 2011

To hear Donald Trump tell it, “millions of people” are waiting for him to make an endorsement in the Republican presidential primary. And at some point, he says, he’ll likely grace a candidate with one — that is, unless he decides to run himself as an independent. The real estate mogul and reality TV star, who flirted with seeking the Republican presidential nomination but decided to sit out, says he has a “tremendous following of people who are tired of seeing this country get ripped off.” Read full article > >

Eugene Robinson: Donald Trump debate decision is bad news only for comedians

Tuesday, December 13th, 2011

Donald Trump’s decision to call off the “debate” he was set to “moderate” means that the American political process gets to keep its last shred of dignity, at least for now. Given the way this campaign has been developing, this should be cause for celebration throughout the land — except among the clever people who write for “Saturday Night Live,” “The Daily Show” and late-night comedians. They must be devastated. Read full article > >

Jonathan Capehart: Donald Trump bows out of the Newsmax debate

Tuesday, December 13th, 2011

I just knew there was a tremor in the force yesterday. So, during our morning editorial board meeting, I sent an e-mail to the executive assistant of a certain New York-based real-estate mogul. “Wondering if Mr. Trump were available for a quick chat,” I wrote. The increased criticisms of the Dec. 27 Newsmax-Ion Television debate got me to wondering if Donald Trump would drop out of participating in the Iowa gathering. Read full article > >

NEW YORK — Donald Trump says he is pulling out of a Republican presidential debate he had agreed to moderate in Iowa. Trump praises Texas Gov. Rick Perry’s presidential bid, refuses to rule out independent bid

Wednesday, August 17th, 2011

NEW YORK — Real estate mogul Donald Trump said Tuesday he expects Texas Gov. Rick Perry to do “very nicely” as a presidential candidate. But Trump stopped short of endorsing Perry and said he hasn’t ruled out running for president himself as an independent. In an interview with The Associated Press, Trump said Perry was a welcome entry in the GOP field that includes former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann. Bachmann won the Iowa straw poll Saturday, the same day Perry announced he too would seek the party’s nomination to challenge President Barack Obama in 2012. Read full article > >

Lawrence O’Donnell hits his marks as Keith Olbermann’s successor on MSNBC

Friday, May 27th, 2011

NEW YORK — Now here’s something you don’t see every day. Actually, you don’t see it any day: a cable-news host shredding his own employer for aiding and abetting a national “charade.” “NBC has created a monster and it is called Donald Trump,” began Lawrence O’Donnell on his MSNBC show, “The Last Word,” last month. For nearly 15 minutes, O’Donnell hammered away, calling Trump “the most deranged egomaniac in the history of the NBC Entertainment division” and denouncing his would-be presidential run and “birther” allegations against President Obama as a “sleazy” publicity stunt for his NBC show, “The Celebrity Apprentice.” O’Donnell demanded that NBC executives disclose — “tonight, before you leave your offices” — whether Trump had already committed to another season of “Apprentice,” a disclosure that would have exposed his campaign as a sham. Donald Trump says he won’t run for president in 2012

Either way, the reality-TV star and real estate mogul has concluded that the time has come to end it. “After considerable deliberation and reflection, I have decided not to pursue the office of the presidency,” Trump announced in a statement Monday.
