Is Mitt Romney underrated?

Sunday, March 25th, 2012

Is Mitt Romney underrated? That question hasn’t been asked much during the former Massachusetts governor’s run for the 2012 presidential nomination. In fact, the dominant story line when it comes to Romney is the exact opposite — that someone with his résumé who was widely seen as the runner-up in the 2008 Republican presidential race should have long ago wrapped up the GOP nod. The Influence Industry: Romney’s record with small donors shows enthusiasm gap

Thursday, February 23rd, 2012

For one piece of evidence of an enthusiasm gap between Mitt Romney and his rivals for the GOP presidential nomination , look no further than his campaign’s financial report. At first glance, the numbers may seem like good news for Romney, given that he is by far the strongest fundraiser in the field. Through the end of January, he had raised $63.2 million for his campaign, more than twice as much as the next most successful Republican candidate, Rep. Ron Paul (Tex.), who had raised $30 million. Newt Gingrich had brought in $18.2 million, and the figure for Rick Santorum was $6.7 million. Read full article > >

Political endorsements don’t mean a lot — unless you’re Donald Trump

Wednesday, December 28th, 2011

To hear Donald Trump tell it, “millions of people” are waiting for him to make an endorsement in the Republican presidential primary. And at some point, he says, he’ll likely grace a candidate with one — that is, unless he decides to run himself as an independent. The real estate mogul and reality TV star, who flirted with seeking the Republican presidential nomination but decided to sit out, says he has a “tremendous following of people who are tired of seeing this country get ripped off.” Read full article > >

Eugene Robinson: Donald Trump debate decision is bad news only for comedians

Tuesday, December 13th, 2011

Donald Trump’s decision to call off the “debate” he was set to “moderate” means that the American political process gets to keep its last shred of dignity, at least for now. Given the way this campaign has been developing, this should be cause for celebration throughout the land — except among the clever people who write for “Saturday Night Live,” “The Daily Show” and late-night comedians. They must be devastated. Read full article > >

Jonathan Capehart: Donald Trump bows out of the Newsmax debate

Tuesday, December 13th, 2011

I just knew there was a tremor in the force yesterday. So, during our morning editorial board meeting, I sent an e-mail to the executive assistant of a certain New York-based real-estate mogul. “Wondering if Mr. Trump were available for a quick chat,” I wrote. The increased criticisms of the Dec. 27 Newsmax-Ion Television debate got me to wondering if Donald Trump would drop out of participating in the Iowa gathering. Read full article > >

Trump praises Texas Gov. Rick Perry’s presidential bid, refuses to rule out independent bid

Wednesday, August 17th, 2011

NEW YORK — Real estate mogul Donald Trump said Tuesday he expects Texas Gov. Rick Perry to do “very nicely” as a presidential candidate. But Trump stopped short of endorsing Perry and said he hasn’t ruled out running for president himself as an independent. In an interview with The Associated Press, Trump said Perry was a welcome entry in the GOP field that includes former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann. Bachmann won the Iowa straw poll Saturday, the same day Perry announced he too would seek the party’s nomination to challenge President Barack Obama in 2012. Read full article > >
