ISLAMABAD, Pakistan – Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari was in stable condition at a Dubai hospital on Wednesday after medical tests relating to heart problems, the government said, dismissing frenzied rumors that the embattled leader was about to resign. Zardari flew to the Persian Gulf city on Tuesday following “symptoms” related to a pre-existing cardiac condition, and doctors were trying to determine whether the signs were a reaction to medication, the prime minister’s office said in a statement. A government spokesman did not respond to a request for comments on reports by news agencies, which cited sources close to Zardari, that the president had suffered a minor heart attack. Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain’s announcement that he is suspending, rather than terminating, his campaign appears to give him greater flexibility in the months ahead to transfer leftover funds to a candidate or political committee of his choice. That financial flexibility — as well as the potential to benefit by picking up Cain’s supporters — was not lost on the other GOP presidential hopefuls, who Sunday morning continued to heap praise on the embattled former Godfather’s Pizza executive. CAIRO — Egypt’s military chief announced Tuesday that the embattled armed forces leadership would hand over power to an elected president no later than July 1, 2012 — earlier than previously expected — even as he defiantly defended the military’s handling of mounting opposition protests. In his first address to the nation since he took power in February, Field Marshal Mohammed Hussein Tantawi appeared angry, accusing protesters of “insulting” the military despite its efforts to govern the nation during a difficult transitional period. He warned that “any other efforts aimed at hitting us and destroying our spirits and the trust between the armed forces and the people will not be helpful.” Read full article > >

SANAA, Yemen — In his first major speech since returning to Yemen, President Ali Abdullah Saleh made vague comments Saturday that he is willing to leave power but offered no concrete plan for the country’s future. Yemen’s opposition voiced doubt that the embattled leader was serious. It was not the first time Saleh has expressed a willingness to step down amid eight months of protests demanding his ouster. But he has repeatedly refused to resign immediately and rejected a U.S.-backed deal for him to hand over his authority. Read full article > >
