Pakistan President Zardari travels abroad for medical tests, sparking rumors

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan – Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari was in stable condition at a Dubai hospital on Wednesday after medical tests relating to heart problems, the government said, dismissing frenzied rumors that the embattled leader was about to resign. Zardari flew to the Persian Gulf city on Tuesday following “symptoms” related to a pre-existing cardiac condition, and doctors were trying to determine whether the signs were a reaction to medication, the prime minister’s office said in a statement. A government spokesman did not respond to a request for comments on reports by news agencies, which cited sources close to Zardari, that the president had suffered a minor heart attack. CAIRO — Egypt’s military chief announced Tuesday that the embattled armed forces leadership would hand over power to an elected president no later than July 1, 2012 — earlier than previously expected — even as he defiantly defended the military’s handling of mounting opposition protests. In his first address to the nation since he took power in February, Field Marshal Mohammed Hussein Tantawi appeared angry, accusing protesters of “insulting” the military despite its efforts to govern the nation during a difficult transitional period. SANAA, Yemen — In his first major speech since returning to Yemen, President Ali Abdullah Saleh made vague comments Saturday that he is willing to leave power but offered no concrete plan for the country’s future. Yemen’s opposition voiced doubt that the embattled leader was serious. It was not the first time Saleh has expressed a willingness to step down amid eight months of protests demanding his ouster.
