Iran claims another feat in nuclear program, says it’s produced nuclear fuel rod for 1st time

Sunday, January 1st, 2012

TEHRAN, Iran — Iranian scientists have produced the nation’s first nuclear fuel rod, a feat of engineering the West has doubted Tehran capable of, the country’s nuclear agency said Sunday. The announcement marks another step in Tehran’s efforts to achieve proficiency in the entire nuclear fuel cycle — from exploring uranium ore to producing nuclear fuel — despite U.N. sanctions and measures by the U.S. and others to get it to halt aspects of its atomic work that could provide a possible pathway to weapons production. Maryland football thought nothing could top dismal 2009 season, until this year

Friday, November 25th, 2011

Some Maryland players said it felt like a dark cloud hovered over their team house during the entire 2009 season. Heart-wrenching losses, unforeseen injuries and overall misfortune marred a 10-loss season that they felt was the worst football experience they would ever endure. Then came this season. A loss Saturday at North Carolina State would give Maryland (2-9, 1-6 ACC) its second 10-loss season in the past three years. All factors considered, some veterans have said this season has been worse than the 2009 season that nearly cost then-Coach Ralph Friedgen his job. Read full article > >

NBA lockout: Former union leader Charles Grantham says players shouldn’t ‘confuse resolve with good judgment’

Saturday, November 19th, 2011

In a show of solidarity, or perhaps defiance, about 50 NBA players packed themselves into a cramped ballroom last week to announce that they were not only going to leave the league’s latest take-it-or-leave-it offer, but they also were willing to possibly forfeit their entire 2011-12 salaries to get a collective bargaining agreement that they deem fair. Uniontown owner’s arrest: A step backward for historic Anacostia?

Sunday, November 13th, 2011

I walked to the nearest corner store in Anacostia yesterday because I needed crackers for soup. I don’t go there often because it’s not the most pleasant of places; it’s dank and the owners—nice people—collect their money from behind plexiglass. But I walked in yesterday to find a new owner and disturbing changes. Previously, you walked around, collected your items and paid at the front counter. Now, the entire store is behind Plexiglas. You have to point to the items you want and the owner goes and gets them for you. Read full article > >

Going Out Guide: Ann Hornaday’s Holiday movie guide

Thursday, November 3rd, 2011

“The Darkest Hour” is the name of a movie that opens on Christmas Day this year, but it might as well be the catchphrase for the entire holiday season at the multiplex. Consider some titles soon to grace screens at theaters near you: “Into the Abyss.” “Melancholia.” “In the Land of Blood and Honey.” If you don’t care for “Outrage,” how about “Shame”? 2011 World Series Game 6: St. Louis Cardinals beat Texas Rangers, force Game 7 on David Freese homer in 11th

Saturday, October 29th, 2011

ST. LOUIS — The Texas Rangers were finding out Thursday night, in Game 6 of the World Series, what the entire National League found out in September, what the Philadelphia Phillies and Milwaukee Brewers found out in October: You cannot kill the St. Louis Cardinals . If they are down to their last game, they will win it. If they are down to their last out, they will redeem it. If they are down to their last strike, you’d better paint the corner and pray. Ask Amy: Freshman student fails ethics test

Sunday, October 16th, 2011

DEAR AMY: My freshman seminar professor recently assigned a labor-intensive reading assignment. I didn’t have time to do the entire thing, so a few of my classmates and I split up the assignment and then swapped notes (I still skimmed the other parts, trying not to feel like a slacker.) Is this practice morally sound if we’re only sharing notes and turning them in for grades? Read full article > >
