The D.C. Council approved an overhaul of the city’s ethics laws Tuesday, toughening disclosure requirements and for the first time agreeing on an impeachment process that punishes misconduct. The bill, approved by a vote of 12 to 1, caps a six-month effort by the council to respond to a series of ethical controversies involving some council members that have shaken the public’s confidence in its ability to police itself . Council member Tommy Wells (D-Ward 6) voted no. Read full article > >

The story of a Cleveland 8-year-old put into foster care because his mother neglected to manage his weight, allowing it to rise to 200 pounds, has drawn national attention. It is the first time that state officials can recall a child being moved into foster care solely because of his weight. Many have attacked the move as an overreach, with the state inappropriately moving a child out of his mother’s house. Ethical issues aside, the case raises an interesting policy question: Will it work? How much do parents influence their children’s weight? Read full article > >

One week after a U.S. military airstrike killed a 16-year-old American citizen in Yemen , no one in the Obama administration, Pentagon or Congress has taken responsibility for his death, or even publicly acknowledged that it happened. The absence of official accountability for the demise of Abdulrahman al-Awlaki, a Denver native and the son of an al-Qaeda member, deepens the legal and ethical murkiness of the Obama administration’s campaign to kill alleged enemies of the state outside of traditional war zones. U.S. government researchers who purposely infected unwitting subjects with sexually transmitted diseases in Guatemala in the 1940s had obtained consent a few years earlier before conducting similar experiments in Indiana, investigators reported Monday. The stark contrast between how the U.S. Public Health Service scientists experimented with Americans and Guatemalans clearly shows that researchers knew their conduct was unethical, according to members of the Presidential Commission for the Study of Bioethical Issues, which is investigating the experiments. Because we clearly have not lifted enough from Matt’s blog today, I want to double down on this point about the value of fast food in regards to weight-loss: I think that sometimes people need to be just a bit more patient with the operation of things. I see the McDonald’s oatmeal saga as in some ways optimistic. The first piece of good news about McDonald’s oatmeal is that, as a marketing strategy, they clearly think there’s money to be made in selling people food that they perceive as healthier than the existing McDonald’s options. The second piece of good news about McDonald’s oatmeal is that, as a matter of corporate policy, McDonald’s discloses extensive nutritional information about the food they sell. Thanks to the second piece of good news, we know that the promise of healthy McDonald’s oatmeal is a lie. And thanks to the Affordable Care Act, more extensive and aggressive calorie information will be coming. Last year I found myself traveling a lot and thus ending up in my room with McNasty’s or Burger King. I can not overstate the benefit of knowing, as much as possible, the precise amount of calories you’re taking. Many of the fast food chains make that really easy. This is a very good thing. As Matt says, calories are most certainly not intuitive. There are “salads” out there that will hit you like a burger I love Maoz. But the Junior. falafel ultimately, has roughly same amount of calories as the Junior Whopper . Again, there are other important and very good reasons (overall health, ethical, environmental etc.) to go with the falafel. But I don’t think weight loss–in and of itself–is a good one. Food is complicated. When in doubt, I try to avoid the hidden price tag.

I don’t regularly co-mingle with international human rights lawyers but I do regularly investigate the local sustainability impacts of foreign investment, including in the ethically and environmentally challenged extractives industry. Thus it was that in early December, I found myself at a c onference in The Hague organized by the World Legal Forum. read more
