The D.C. Council approved an overhaul of the city’s ethics laws Tuesday, toughening disclosure requirements and for the first time agreeing on an impeachment process that punishes misconduct. LONDON — CNN star interviewer Piers Morgan faces questions Tuesday about his time at the top of Britain’s tabloid industry — widely anticipated testimony that may dredge up allegations his British newspaper career was colored by wrongdoing. Morgan ran two British tabloids — the News of the World and the Daily Mirror — before his editorship was cut short by scandal in 2004. He’s due to give evidence to Britain’s media ethics inquiry by video link from the United States — one of a host of tabloid newspaper executives to face the inquiry, set up in the wake of the News of the World phone hacking scandal. Bioethics panel urges system to compensate those hurt in medical experiments

Friday, December 16th, 2011

The federal government should develop a way to compensate volunteers who are harmed while participating in medical experiments, a presidential commission recommended Thursday. In a 208-page report, the Presidential Commission for the Study of Bioethical Issues concluded that existing regulations are sufficient to protect people involved in federally funded research from suffering harm and unethical treatment, both in the United States and overseas. But the commission recommended 14 steps to improve protections, including establishing a uniform compensation system for when harm does occur. Read full article > >

Jennifer Rubin: Newt Gingrich and the unknown unknowns

Monday, December 5th, 2011

At some point, this Newtonian episode is going to wind up in a campaign ad. House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said in an online interview that she would share what she knows about Newt Gingrich from her days on the ethics committee that eventually meted out a record $300,000 fine . (“I served on the investigative committee that investigated him, four of us locked in a room in an undisclosed location for a year,” Pelosi told Talking Points Memo . “A thousand pages of his stuff.”) Gingrich was outraged that she should reveal the facts about which he was investigated, contrary to a system designed to afford members of Congress the maximum protection. He blustered that this would be a “fundamental [Gingrich’s favorite word] violation of the rules of the House.” Read full article > >

House Judiciary Committee Chairman Lamar Smith (R-Tex.) called for the release of more documents about Kagan’s role as President Obama’s solicitor general; the liberal group People for the American Way came out with another broadside against Thomas.
