Report: Iran begins uranium enrichment at new site as Guard threatens key strait closure

Sunday, January 8th, 2012

TEHRAN, Iran — Iran has begun uranium enrichment at a new underground site well protected from possible airstrikes, a leading hardline newspaper reported Sunday in another show of defiance against Western pressure to rein in Tehran’s nuclear program. Another newspaper quoted a senior commander of the powerful Revolutionary Guard force as saying Tehran’s leadership has decided to order the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic oil route, if the country’s petroleum exports are blocked. Revolutionary Guard ground forces also staged war games in eastern Iran in an apparent display of resolve against U.S. forces just over the border in Afghanistan. Read full article > >

China’s boom ends as investment, exports, manufacturing fall

Thursday, December 15th, 2011

BEIJING – A top Chinese government economist confirmed Thursday what a slew of recent economic data had already shown — that China’s long-booming economy has slowed dramatically, and the era of double-digit growth is now officially a thing of the past. “We believe China is nearing the end of the period of high economic growth,” said Yu Bin, director general of macroeconomic research for the ruling State Council’s research center. “What we need is moderate and reasonable economic growth.” Read full article > >

Japan PM Noda delays decision on trade pact

Thursday, November 10th, 2011

TOKYO — With Japan’s ruling party still divided over a controversial regional free trade deal, Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda on Thursday delayed his decision on whether Japan should commit to the pact. Noda will wait until Friday to announce Japan’s intentions. Joining the U.S.-backed Asia-Pacific free trade agreement could transform the world’s third-largest economy, slashing tariffs, allowing for cheaper imports and giving new opportunities for struggling exporters. But new foreign competition could also cripple the agriculture industry, whose many advocates — including those in Noda’s party — say the deal will threaten rural areas. Read full article > >

In Japan, possible free trade deal comes with an argument

Sunday, October 30th, 2011

TOKYO — In an upscale neighborhood where Japanese buy their handbags and smartphones, furious farmers drove their tractors down the main road last week in their latest protest against a controversial, regionwide free-trade pact. The stunt was an illustration of the way the country’s agricultural forces are pushing up against modern glitz. As Japan nears a self-imposed deadline to decide whether to participate in the U.S.-backed Trans-Pacific Partnership, it must first resolve a clash between farmers who think the pact will ruin them and exporters who want to reach new markets with lower tariffs. U.S. modules triggered IEDs in Iraq, officials say

Tuesday, October 25th, 2011

Radio frequency modules manufactured in the United States ended up in the detonation systems of roadside bombs targeting coalition forces in Iraq, according to the Justice Department, which Tuesday unsealed an indictment describing the illegal export of the devices to Iran . The department said it is seeking the extradition of four individuals who were arrested Monday in Singapore. The department said the four men, all citizens of Singapore, falsely told the U.S. firm, which is based in Minnesota, that the modules were for a telecommunications project in Singapore. U.S. economic recovery tied to European debt crisis

Friday, September 30th, 2011

The political intrigues in Brussels and Berlin over Europe’s debt crisis are as foreign to most Americans as the languages spoken there. U.S. exports to Europe don’t even amount to a fiftieth of what Americans produce. And American banks have at best a modest toehold in the European countries facing possible default.
