Supreme Court term will include cases highlighting extent of federal power

Saturday, October 1st, 2011

The Supreme Court convenes Monday for what could be the most significant term of Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr.’s six-year tenure , with an agenda that both reflects the nation’s political landscape and offers the potential to reshape it. The dominant theme is the one that has divided the country and fueled the debate between tea party Republicans and President Obama since the 2010 election: the extent of the federal government’s power. Washington Cooks: Greek food love

Tuesday, August 23rd, 2011

No dill in the tzatziki! Spend a Sunday with the Tsipianitis family, and that will be the extent of any culinary deprivation. Once Demetri, Vicky and their sons, Panayioti, 17, and Pavlo, 14, return to their Rockville home from Sts. Constantine & Helen Greek Orthodox Church on 16th Street NW, they get busy in the kitchen. By the time they sit around the table, they’ve all had a hand in preparing a small feast. Shredding cabbage, getting plates and napkins and drinks, preparing the grills because, yes, there are three of those. Whisking drained bits of cucumber, vinegar, garlic, salt and olive oil into Greek yogurt to create that herbless, cool accompaniment for sizzling meats and soft pita bread. The vibe is warm and genuine. They are a poster family for the cause of Eating Together. Read full article > >

Tim McGraw fumbles show at Jiffy Lube Live, but his superstardom is solid

Sunday, August 14th, 2011

There’s no overstating the extent to which country superstar Tim McGraw is able to get by on muscles and charm. If you’d closed your eyes Saturday night at Jiffy Lube Live, you’d have sworn that McGraw had handed his microphone to a fan in the front row, so woefully off-pitch were his vocals. And when you opened them, chances were you’d find McGraw had stopped singing and assumed an acre-wide, come-worship-me pose. A surprisingly decent movie actor (“ The Blind Side ,” “ Country Strong ”), McGraw need only play one role onstage: Badass hunk. Read full article > >

Bulls vs. Heat: Dwyane Wade rallies Heat in overtime to lead Miami to Game 4 win in Eastern Conference finals

Wednesday, May 25th, 2011

MIAMI — This is about as quiet as Miami Heat guard Dwyane Wade gets. He didn’t score a single point in the third quarter. Not one in the fourth. He had a measly eight points at the start of overtime. To the extent he had stood out during regulation of Game 4 of the Eastern Conference finals against the Chicago Bulls , it was for a botched uncontested dunk early Tuesday night, and turnovers. But as Chicago tried to handle an onslaught from the other parts of Miami’s Big Three, Wade woke up just when the Heat needed him. He scored six points in the extra period, blocked two shots and contributed a steal to help the Heat finally shed the relentless Bulls with a 101-93 victory. Read full article > >

Alexander Cockburn | The American Way of Torture

Friday, January 7th, 2011

Just over the edge of 2011 and this fresh new decade, torture is now solidly installed in America’s repressive arsenal. Not in the shadows where it has always lurked, but up front and central, vigorously applauded by prominent politicians. Rituals of coercion and humiliation seep through the culture, to the extent that before Christmas, American travelers began to rebel at the invasive pat-down searches conducted by the TSA’s airport security teams groping around bosoms and crotches. read more
