Michael Copperthite has butter, sugar and flour in his blood. His great-great-grandfather was Henry Copperthite, the so-called “Pie King” of Georgetown and founder of the Connecticut-Copperthite Pie Co. 1. The American dream is about getting rich. In a national survey of more than 1,300 adults that we completed in March, only 6 percent of Americans ranked “wealth” as their first or second definition of the American dream. Forty-five percent named “a good life for my family,” while 34 percent put “financial security” — material comfort that is not necessarily synonymous with Bill Gates-like riches — on top. Atlantic, Iowa — Where are the Romney supporters? You would think that the Family Table Restaurant in Atlantic, Iowa — Mitt Romney’s first campaign stop of 2012 — would be a good place to find Romney supporters. But as usual with Romney, you would be mistaken. Throughout the campaign, there have been many strong Not Romney supporters. If Not Romney were an actual candidate, he would be leading the pack. In fact, he has been for the past few months, under varying names. People are so eager not to vote for Romney that, after exhausting all other options, they are preparing to vote for Rick Santorum, whom many of them have never heard of, even though he took them out for coffee that one time. No matter how old I get or how much I procreate, the elders in the family always seem to cover the Christmas meals. Sure, I pitch in by taking over a tradition or two — braiding the Christmas breakfast wreath or assembling the trifle for Christmas dinner — but I have yet to actually host. My duties don’t really kick in until the next week, for New Year’s Eve. And that is a meal I like to dive into, deeply. It started the year a friend needed to break in a new kitchen at a little beach house, and I was a newly minted food writer. I threw myself into the project, the perfect marriage of my personal and professional selves. The menu featured fish from the nearby dock, wine from a local vineyard and a collection of other courses with recipes I’d loved, and in some cases published, during the year. Read full article > >
