FTC hard-pressed to secure refunds for job-scam victims

The Federal Trade Commission sent refund checks last month to 75,000 people under a settlement with a Texas firm that allegedly charged them for an online list of work-at-home jobs but then often denied them access and refused to give back the fees. Under the agreement, the firm, Abili-Staff, faced a judgment of $3.6 million. But the bulk of that amount was suspended because the company’s owners could not pay it, court records show. Carrier IQ faces federal probe into allegations software tracks cellphone data

Federal investigators are probing allegations that Carrier IQ software found on about 150 million cellphones tracked user activity and sent the information to cellphone companies without informing consumers, according to government officials. Executives from Carrier IQ traveled to Washington on Tuesday and met with officials at the Federal Trade Commission , which is responsible for protecting consumers and enforcing privacy laws. Netflix named Christopher Libertelli to head its Washington policy and lobbying office Thursday, as the online video giant increases its voice in communications and Internet privacy policies. Libertelli was the head of North and South American government regulations for Skype, the Internet voice and video service that pushed for the creation of Internet access, or net neutrality, rules at the Federal Trade Commission. Four Loko to relabel cans to show alcohol content after pressure from FTC

The maker of a sweet alcoholic drink that appeals to teenagers will start disclosing on its labels that its super-size cans contain as much alcohol as four to five cans of beer , federal regulators announced Monday. Phusion Projects agreed to relabel its Four Loko beverages under pressure from the Federal Trade Commission, which has confronted the company more than once about its advertising practices. The Chicago-based company did not admit any wrongdoing. But in a statement, it said it will relabel its malt drinks to better inform consumers. Read full article > >
