The Federal Trade Commission sent refund checks last month to 75,000 people under a settlement with a Texas firm that allegedly charged them for an online list of work-at-home jobs but then often denied them access and refused to give back the fees. Under the agreement, the firm, Abili-Staff, faced a judgment of $3.6 million. But the bulk of that amount was suspended because the company’s owners could not pay it, court records show. So in the end, each person got an average payment of only $9.70. Read full article > >

Netflix named Christopher Libertelli to head its Washington policy and lobbying office Thursday, as the online video giant increases its voice in communications and Internet privacy policies. Libertelli was the head of North and South American government regulations for Skype, the Internet voice and video service that pushed for the creation of Internet access, or net neutrality, rules at the Federal Trade Commission. He replaces Michael Drobac, who is leaving Netflix to launch an Internet-based health care startup. Read full article > >

The maker of a sweet alcoholic drink that appeals to teenagers will start disclosing on its labels that its super-size cans contain as much alcohol as four to five cans of beer , federal regulators announced Monday. The Chicago-based company did not admit any wrongdoing. But in a statement, it said it will relabel its malt drinks to better inform consumers. Read full article > >

Rep. John L. Mica has what he calls a “weakness,” an obsession with art. He has fulfilled it as any aspiring connoisseur might. He scours odd shops and auction sites for objects treasured only by dust mites but still accruing worth with each passing year. He makes frequent trips to the National Gallery to research what he has bought and what he could buy. One day, while at the museum, he looked across the street and saw something old and undervalued: the Apex building, home to the Federal Trade Commission. Read full article > >
