The Red Cross was not able to rescue two Western journalists from Homs, despite being able to rescue seven from Baba Amr. Edith Bouvier, a reporter with Le Figaro, and British photographer Paul Conroy, who works for the Sunday Times, were wounded when the Assad regime targeted a makeshift media center on Wednesday. They had asked for help leaving the city, but the Red Cross was unable to get to them and the two bodies of journalists killed in the fighting. Government forces said armed groups refused to turn over the reporters, but resistance activists said the journalists refused to leave the city. The Red Cross got to Homs on Friday and has tried to negotiate the evacuation of injured civilians, but has had difficulty navigating the hatred between Assad’s forces and the opposition.

RALEIGH, N.C. — Maryland ’s unbeaten romp in December did wonders for the young Terrapins’ confidence. But opponents such as Mount St. Mary’s , Radford and Samford hardly foreshadowed the physical front court and intense ball pressure Maryland faced Sunday in its ACC opener at North Carolina State. Too often in Raleigh’s wildly partisan RBC Center, Maryland lost the battle when it came to toughness — whether fighting for rebounds or simply hanging on to the ball. Read full article > >

President Woodrow Wilson had two minutes in mind when he declared the first Armistice Day in 1919. All business was to stop for that amount of time at the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month to remember the end to the fighting in World War I a year earlier. Those two minutes turned into something bigger: a federal holiday, now called Veterans Day, to honor the troops. On 11/11/11, nearly 100 years after Wilson’s proclamation, we’re taking a moment to highlight other ways the military serves us — with parades, concerts, air shows and exhibits, most of which are free. So make your way to the following places and events to appreciate the military on this Veterans Day and beyond. (Events are free unless otherwise noted.) Read full article > >

Adapted from a recent online discussion. Your fighting is worse for Ethan than going to the wrong school plus whatever junk food he eats in a month plus whatever else you’re over-/under-indulging him with as a byproduct of your mutual inability to act like grown-ups. I won’t include the spanking in that because Ethan is 10 years old . Whatever highly debatable benefits you were (er, one of you was) able to embrace with spanking, you can now achieve by actually talking to the kid. Read full article > >

America’s only Civil War was a bloody affair resulting in the deaths of hundreds of thousands of U.S. soldiers from both the Northern Union and the Southern Confederacy — with more Americans killed than in any other war in history. The conflict broke out 150 years ago this week and lasted until 1865. The photographs below reveal just how brutal the fighting life could be.
