Obama’s backers put out calls for support

Saturday, January 14th, 2012

In a suburban Virginia living room, Earline Coe, solid Democrat and Obama loyalist, dials again. “Hello, may I speak with Ellen?” she says, tapping a pen on a long list of names. It is supposed to be a good list, one generated by the Obama campaign’s data wonks in Chicago, who have sorted their files of millions of voters and identified these as likely recruits in a renewed version of the vaunted grass-roots operation that propelled Obama’s 2008 victory. The House Committee on Ethics said Thursday that it was extending an investigation into the conduct of Rep. Vern Buchanan (R-Fla.), who has previously come under scrutiny for reimbursements made to his employees for campaign donations. The announcement by Chairman Jo Bonner (R-Ala.) and ranking member Linda T. Gingrich’s time of testing arrives

Saturday, December 17th, 2011

Newt Gingrich had planned a mostly quiet weekend, a short break from the rigors of the campaign trail after a busy week. Instead, he was on the phone all Saturday morning, holding a tele-town hall with Iowans and later a conference call with reporters. He apparently realized he cannot afford to rest when his candidacy is on the line. Read full article > >

Arbitrator thrashes Cuba Broadcasting over worker treatment

Wednesday, December 14th, 2011

The Broadcasting Board of Governors (BBG) has been taken to the woodshed by an arbitrator who gave the agency a good spanking. It’s a lesson to bosses all across the government. At first glance, the case involving the BBG’s Office of Cuba Broadcasting appears to be a routine one about the level of involvement the agency allowed a labor union when layoffs were ordered. At the bottom of the world, a controversial search for cosmic leftovers

Sunday, December 4th, 2011

The geologist who conceived it called it the poor man’s space program. Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) fumed that it was a waste of taxpayer dollars. Meteorite hunter Ralph Harvey simply calls it work. For the 35th year, the United States is mounting its annual campaign to gather space rocks from the wind-hammered icefields of Antarctica. Read full article > >

Why Republicans like Newt Gingrich

Saturday, December 3rd, 2011

Things sure do change fast around here. One week it’s Rick Perry, the next it’s Herman Cain. Now it’s . . . Newt Gingrich ? The Republican voter is like a starving man at a free buffet. He gorges on this, then that, then spies a steaming plump pork roast at the far end of the table. Charge! (No anatomical parallels intended. I’m a little hungry myself.) Read full article > >

Friday, December 2nd, 2011

The Senate late Thursday rejected competing partisan visions for extending a temporary tax break that benefits virtually every American worker, clearing the way for more serious negotiations over how to cover the cost of the tax cut. All but a handful of Democrats voted in favor of their party’s proposal, but in a surprising turn, more Republicans voted against the GOP plan than in favor of it. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) predicted this week that a majority of his conference would vote for the party’s plan to extend the payroll tax cut. Read full article > >
