“ Luck ,” HBO’s new gritty, realistic (if somewhat confusing) horse racing drama, is in hot water with PETA, after it became public that two horses died during the filming of the series’s first season. As Entertainment Weekly reported , the pilot — which fictionalized a horse being injured and euthanized in one scene — did not carry the American Humane Association’s stamp to assure viewers that “No animals were harmed” during filming. That’s because a horse suffered a severe fracture while filming a race sequence and had to be euthanized. The same fate befell a second horse during episode seven’s filming. Read full article > >

John Latenser doesn’t want to lose his dome. The Bethesda-based location scout was standing last week on one of Hollywood’s favorite spots in D.C., a sliver of pavement at the edge of the reflecting pool with the U.S. Capitol looming just so over his shoulder — as it has loomed over Sean Penn, Aaron Eckhart and various Transformer robots . Wait, they haven’t given out the Oscars for last year’s films and we’re already talking about 2012? It’s hard to believe another movie season is upon us — and even harder, at a time when Hollywood seems more addicted than ever to sequels, prequels and reboots, that we might go to the multiplex and enjoy something genuinely original. The spring collection of films includes its share of adaptations of proven properties, but as anyone familiar with “Batman” or “The Green Lantern” knows, it’s all in the execution. Here are some opening dates to circle (and maybe one to cross off): Read full article > >
