I understand why people want politicians to be nicer to each other on cable television. It’s not an overwhelming concern of mine, but I understand it. However, please don’t tell us that the corrosive state of political discourse in this country has much of anything to do with the shootings in Tucson. This is the latest information on Jared Loughner’s interior life; it does not seem as if he has been operating under the influence of Roger Ailes: The new details from Mr. Gutierrez about Mr. Loughner — including his philosophy of anarchy and his expertise with a handgun, suggest that the earliest signs of behavior that may have ultimately led to the attacks started several years ago. Mr. Gutierrez said his friend had become obsessed with the meaning of dreams and their importance. He talked about reading Friedrich Nietzsche’s book “The Will To Power” and embraced ideas about the corrosive, destructive effects of nihilism — a belief in nothing. And every day, his friend said, Mr. Loughner would get up and write in his dream journal, recording the world he experienced in sleep and its possible meanings. “Jared felt nothing existed but his subconscious,” Mr. Gutierrez said. “The dream world was what was real to Jared, not the day-to-day of our lives.” And that dream world, his friend said, could be downright strange. “He would ask me constantly, ‘Do you see that blue tree over there?’ He would admit to seeing the sky as orange and the grass as blue,” Mr. Gutierrez said. “Normal people don’t talk about that stuff.”

I have a dispatch in the new issue of The Atlantic about “general aviation,” and the complete lack of security at private airports across the country. Advocates of general aviation (this means you, Fallows) argue that the system is safe and self-regulating; Goldblog, on the other hand, sees a potential threat in this unmonitored space. Of course, this is a class issue as well; rich people (this does not mean you, Fallows) are able to buy their way out of the hassles of airport security. This would be fine, I suppose, if rich people were uniformly trustworthy, but they are not (Osama bin Laden is one who comes to mind). The dispatch is already getting some pushback, of course; one blogger titled his post on the subject “Jeffrey Goldberg, Fear Pumper,” which is funny, because “fear pumper” is my porn name. Here is an excerpt from my dispatch: Fifteen minutes after leaving Manhattan, we arrived at the airport gate. A private security guard asked my friend for the tail number of our plane. He provided the number–or he provided a few digits of the number–and we were waved through, without an identification check. The plane, I should point out, didn’t belong to my friend; it belonged to a company with which my friend’s business does business. We drove to the terminal–operated by Signature Flight Support, a leading provider of general-aviation services–where we met our co-pilot, who escorted us to the plane. “You’re Mr. Goldba?” the co-pilot said to me. “It’s Goldberg,” I said. “Okay, the e-mail must have gotten cut off or something.” We continued to the plane. I asked my friend–let’s refer to him as “Osama bin La”–if there would be any security check whatsoever before we went wheels-up. He laughed. “I think the law says we have to pat each other down.” “Do these pilots know you well?” I asked. “Is that why they trust you to bring me along?” He first met them that morning, he said, when they flew him to Teterboro.

One of my earliest memories is sitting on the couch with my mom as she read Charlotte’s Web to me and my sister. Thinking back on the book, I don’t remember all of the details, but I do remember that Charlotte (the spider) was helping save her friend Wilbur (the pig) from being killed. I remembered there was a mischievous rat named Templeton that I thought was cool.I also remember me and my sister crying as my mom read us the end of the book. read more

This is a city that loves a great prizefight, and Sen. Harry Reid used to be a boxer, so it was inevitable at a big rally here Friday night that President Obama would cast his friend as the fighter who’s about to get off the canvas and deliver an unexpected win.
