Georgetown vs. Alabama: Hollis Thompson three-pointer gives Hoyas upset of No. 12 Crimson Tide

Saturday, December 3rd, 2011

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The Georgetown men’s basketball team played its first true road game of the season on Thursday night, and what a task it was: A game in Coleman Coliseum against undefeated Alabama , ranked 12th in the country largely on the strength of its unforgiving defense. So the Hoyas figured points would be at a premium and the outcome could come down to a late possession. Sure enough, junior forward Hollis Thompson had the ball in his hands with the game on the line, and after his three-pointer swished through the twine with 1.8 seconds left and Alabama’s desperation heave clanked off the rim, Georgetown celebrated a 57-55 triumph before a capacity crowd of 15,383. Stop Hiding American Diplomacy

The anniversary of Wikileaks’s cable dump last year is spawning reflections of how the awkward revelations changed the game of international diplomacy. In the journal Democracy , Jonathan Spalter argues that they were a much-needed chance to rethink the expansive secrecy of U.S. relations. “It has become one of the great ironies of our time that while the United States has one of the most open societies in the world, its diplomatic activities and the technology infrastructure that support them still remain among the world’s most secretive and siloed.” Spalter says the secrecy makes the U.S. government increasingly out of touch with citizens who are used to an open-source world.

Capitals vs. Islanders: Washington fades to loss after taking 2-0 lead

Sunday, November 6th, 2011

UNIONDALE, N.Y. — The Washington Capitals came to Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum aware that the New York Islanders were mired in a six-game losing streak and eager to climb out of their slump.
