It’s easy to see why Martha Graham’s “ Appalachian Spring ” endures as one of the classics of modern dance. The story of a bride and groom starting a new life in a new land with guidance from a stoic pioneer woman and a fiery preacher, it captures an experience that is uniquely American and laces it with infectious but earnest optimism. Tania Dunbar celebrated a first in her 13-year Army career Sunday: She donned her uniform and proudly introduced Deborah Graham as her wife, not the “cousin” who had previously joined her around Fort Stewart in Georgia. The formal end Tuesday of the military’s 18-year “don’t ask, don’t tell” ban on service members revealing their homosexuality has allowed the couple to share the news that they married in the District in May. President Obama gave one of the most impassioned speeches of his presidency when he addressed a joint session of Congress on Thursday night. Too bad so many in the audience thought it was a big, fat joke. “You should pass this jobs plan right away!” Obama exhorted. Sens. Bob Corker (R-Tenn.) and Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) chuckled. “Warren Buffett pays a lower tax rate than his secretary — an outrage he has asked us to fix,” Obama went on. Widespread laughter broke out on the GOP side of the aisle. Read full article > >

Police have named a suspect in a double homicide in Columbia Heights. Wanted posters hanging in the neighborhood show the face of Irving Harris Johnson, 25, who police say is the lone suspect in the shootings of Jimmie Lee Simmons III, 32, and Dominique Barber, 31, of Northwest. They were killed in the 1400 block of Parkwood Place on July 9. Barber, Simmons and a third man were shot in the head shortly before 6 a.m. outside a house that neighbors and D.C. Council member Jim Graham (D-Ward 1) say is notorious for late-night drug-dealing and gambling. The third man is still being treated for his injuries, Graham said Tuesday. Read full article > >

Former Alaska governor Sarah Palin has canceled a trip next month to war-ravaged Sudan, one of the most unstable nations in the world and the focus of passionate advocacy within the U.S. evangelical community. Palin scrapped her visit to the North African country for scheduling reasons, several sources close to her said. She was planning to travel with Franklin Graham, the son of evangelical leader Billy Graham, as well as Fox News personality Greta Van Susteren, to the July 9 independence ceremony of South Sudan, the sources said. Van Susteren also canceled her trip. Graham said on Wednesday that he still plans to go. Read full article > >

D.C. Council member Jim Graham sat in his office, an envelope stuffed with $2,600 in his hands. He had just been given the cash by a trusted aide, who said it came from a businessman. After a minute or so, Graham said, he shut the flap, secured it with tape, and initialed and dated the envelope. As he handed it back on that July afternoon in 2009, Graham (D-Ward 1) told his chief of staff, Ted G. Loza, to return it immediately. “I think I saw that in a movie someplace, where you have to initial it,” Graham said in an interview Wednesday. Aspects of the encounter first emerged in federal court Tuesday during a sentencing hearing for Loza. Read full article > >

UPDATE 10:30 p.m.: Schultz apologizes to Ingraham, begins suspension • It takes a lot to move the needle in the angry, angry world of talk radio, but Ed Schultz did just that when he referred to fellow host Laura Ingraham as a “right-wing slut” and “talk slut” on his syndicated show Tuesday. The Internet rose up in revolt Wednesday but thus far no comment from lefty host, who also has an MSNBC show. Ingraham, via Facebook , quipped she “was surprised to learn that Ed Schultz actually hosted a radio show” and tut-tutted about “men who preach civility but practice misogyny.” Read full article > >

Cash-strapped states are scaling back efforts to provide life-saving medicines to HIV patients. The result: more than 8,300 people – a record number — are on waiting lists in 13 states to get antiretrovirals and other drugs used to treat HIV and AIDS or the side effects, mental health conditions or opportunistic infections. And that number probably understates the need, say advocates , who note that many states have simply eliminated waiting lists or reduced eligibility. “States that have changed their eligibility programs or don’t have a waiting list, or some states have disenrolled their patients, that’s a kind of silent crisis, I think,” said Jeff Graham, executive director of Georgia Equality , an advocacy group on gay issues. His state holds the second-highest number of patients on a waiting list: 1,520. Read full article > >

People love deals. Merchants need customers. And online coupon dealers are building empires as a result. In the three years since Chicago-based Groupon popularized the model, the online discount industry has grown to include more than 400 similar Web sites across the country, projected to net an estimated $2.67 billion in revenue this year, according to Local Offer Network, which operates daily deal platforms. Groupon and LivingSocial — run by Tim O’Shaughnessy, the son-in-law of Washington Post Co. Chairman Donald E. Graham — currently dominate the market. Digital research firm comScore said both companies have seen their audiences triple over the past year, drawing between 8 million to 12 million unique visitors online last month alone. RALEIGH, N.C. — Evangelist Billy Graham was alert and resting comfortably Wednesday evening after being admitted to an Asheville, N.C. hospital for the treatment of pneumonia, doctors said. The 92-year-old Graham arrived Wednesday morning at Mission Hospital after he suffered a health episode overnight that included sweating, coughing and breathing difficulty, Graham spokesman A. Larry Ross told The Associated Press on Wednesday. “But he was never in distress or an acute situation,” Ross said. “Throughout his stay, he had remained alert and in good spirits and with his humor intact,” Ross said. “He signed his own admission papers.” Read full article > >
