PHOENIX — Christina-Taylor Green’s mother made sure her daughter had a hoodie to keep her warm and was buckled into the car that would take her to grocery store where she going to meet Rep. Gabrielle Giffords. The plan was for the 9-year-old budding student of politics to ask the congresswoman about global warming and then go get her toes done and eat lunch with the neighbor who arranged the outing. ‘Barefoot Bandit,’ teen who hopscotched US in stolen planes, boats and cars, to plead guilty

Friday, December 16th, 2011

SEATTLE — Kyle Ater remembers the three-letter chalk message left on the floor of his Orcas Island grocery store after it was burglarized for the second time by the Barefoot Bandit. Next to cartoonish drawings of footprints was written, “C-YA!” Nearly two years later, that prophesy is coming true. Ater said he’d be there in Island County Superior Court on Friday when Colton Harris-Moore, now 20, is expected to plead guilty to dozens of felony charges stemming from a crime spree that took him — in stolen boats, cars and planes — all the way to the Bahamas. Breakfast buffet: National candy day

Friday, November 4th, 2011

While you're frying up some eggs and bacon, we're cooking up something else: a way to celebrate today's food holiday. Can you feel the sugar rush? – November 4 is National Candy Day ! Unless you're still reeling from an influx of sugar because of extensive trick-or-treating or candy shoveling, this has to be one of the best food holidays of the year. Plus, now is the absolute best time to wipe the grocery store shelves clean of any leftover (and heavily discounted) Halloween candy . Candy has evolved over the years but we've been using that word since our days of speaking Middle English (care for some Chaucer, anyone?). The word was derived from Old French, meaning “cane sugar.” The ever-inventive American spirit prevailed and we expanded from chomping on cane sugar to chocolate, caramels, candy bars, sours, licorice, tarts, taffy, lollipops, gumdrops and the list don't stop. Besides stuffing yourself full of this snack-size fun, you can also make your own. Treat yourself to salty chocolate pecan candy or chocolate-dipped caramels , but beware the seven deadly sins of candy-making . Stick to these tips and you can open your own Chocolate Factory, or be a hero to friends and family alike. So go ahead and join the Lollipop Guild for the day – although we're thinking that dentists might regard this as either D-Day … or a prime business opportunity.
