Not Living Up to Its Reputation: Human Rights in Israel

Thursday, December 8th, 2011

American proponents of a close, even “special,” relationship with Israel often justify their support for the Jewish state on the grounds that “Israel is the only democracy in the Middle East.” Indeed, a quick look at Freedom House’s 2011 Map of Freedom shows a speck of “free” in a sea of “not free.” In contrast to this designation, there are many who are well aware of the controversies surrounding Israeli treatment of Palestinians. Less well known, however, and deserving equal attention, is the growing tide of anti-democratic governance within Israel itself. A number of recent developments show that freedom in Israel is not immutable and shouldn’t be taken for granted.

First faceoff for Perry vs. Bachmann

Monday, August 15th, 2011

WATERLOO, Iowa — Rick Perry was working the tables here Sunday night, mobbed by Iowa Republicans and the media pack, as the strains of “Deep in the Heart of Texas” blared somewhat discordantly on the public address system. Partway across the floor of the Electric Park Ballroom on the grounds of the National Cattle Congress, he paused to recall the last time he had been in Iowa, which was as part of a Republican Governors Association tour several years ago. “The reception was a little different the last time,” he said with a smile. “This is quite good.” Read full article > >

D.C. motorcycle rally called ‘party with a purpose’

Saturday, May 28th, 2011

Q: How can you capitalize on the hundreds of thousands of veterans and bikers who come to the D.C. area for Rolling Thunder and Memorial Day weekend? A: Throw them a four-day, patriotic-themed party. Such were the origins of Stars & Stripes & Spokes , a motorcycle rally that runs through Monday on the grounds of RFK Stadium. The four-day event — the first of what organizers hope will become an annual tradition — was the brainchild of three construction managers from Maryland who wanted to give motorcyclists, veterans and others a venue to let loose while they are in town. In Sagamore Farm, Kevin Plank has a long shot with pedigree

Monday, May 16th, 2011

Not far from traffic-choked I-795 and a few turns past dueling strip malls, Tufton Avenue opens onto 430 acres of serenity. Fourteen miles of white fencing border emerald pastures, and white, red-roofed barns glisten like a wet coat of paint. Here, on the grounds of Sagamore Farm, lie the remains of one of horse racing’s great champions, Native Dancer, who was buried in full (rather than simply his head, hooves and heart, as is common), along with his blanket, halter and a bag of treats. Such was the love that Alfred G. Vanderbilt II had for his prized racehorses. And such was the attention to detail at Sagamore Farm, which was owned by the heir to one of the Gilded Age’s vast fortunes from 1933, when Vanderbilt’s mother presented the property as a 21st birthday gift, until 1986, when he sold it to a developer.
