People’s Choice Awards 2012: Katy Perry, ‘Harry Potter’ dominate the meaningless trophies

Friday, January 13th, 2012

If the People’s Choice Awards are any indication, then Katy Perry and “ Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows — Part 2 ” may be the population’s most beloved pop cultural creations of 2011. The “Fireworks” singer — who, in the wake of her split from Russell Brand, opted not to attend the ceremony , held at Nokia Theatre L.A. Live and broadcast on CBS — snagged six trophies, including Favorite Female Artist, Favorite Tour Headliner, Favorite Song of the Year (for “E.T.”) and Favorite TV Guest Star for her cameo on “How I Met Your Mother.” Read full article > >

David Fincher’s ‘Girl With the Dragon Tattoo’ is satisfying and underwhelming

Monday, December 19th, 2011

“ The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo ” is one of this season’s buzziest movies, as hotly anticipated by its partisans as any installment of “Harry Potter” or “Twilight.” Like Harry and “Twilight’s” Bella Swan, the title character of Stieg Larsson’s best-selling novels has grown into a literary cult figure of freakish devotion. Melissa McCarthy, ‘Harry Potter,’ ‘Breaking Bad’ and more Golden Globe snubs

Thursday, December 15th, 2011

We’ve covered the Golden Globe nominations pretty thoroughly today in Celebritology, focusing on the key surprises in both the movie and television categories , as well as nods earned by former cast members from “The Wire.” But now we must turn our attention to the snubbed, the overlooked and the bypassed — those actors, directors, films and TV shows that, for whatever reason, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association did not see fit to nominate this year. Here are the 10 — including, yes, “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2” — we found most perplexing. Vote for the most egregious snub in the poll that appears below, and feel free to post a comment or tweet using the hashtag #globesfail to express your unhappiness with those absent from the nominees list. TV review: ‘Once Upon a Time’ has magic to spare

Thursday, October 20th, 2011

Make-believe is here to stay. And by that I mean the woods and the witches and the magic spells. The trolls, the wizards, the dwarfs. The thundering hooves, the drawbridges, the dungeons, the emptying of wallets in Orlando. All of it now marketed to us with a wry, modern spin. Insert here my hack, quasi-academic theory about the disappointment of our everyday, 21st-century lives and how this causes otherwise sane grown-ups to seek solace in “realms,” from Harry Potter to “Game of Thrones.” Read full article > >

Emma Watson says fame, not bullying prompted departure from Brown University

Wednesday, June 8th, 2011

When Emma Watson announced she was leaving Brown University this April, rumors that the “Harry Potter” actress was bullied and subjected to dumb teasing — students yelling out “Three points for Gryffindor!” in her classes, for example — began circulating. But in a new interview, Watson denies this is the reason she left school. “It made me so sad when all this stuff came out that I left Brown because I was being bullied,” she told the Sunday Times Style Magazine . “It made no sense at all. Brown has been the opposite.” Read full article > >

Harry Potter Cast Shoots Final Scene

Tuesday, March 22nd, 2011

After a whopping eight films together, you’d think the folks behind all those Harry Potter movies would at least save a little something special for the cast’s final scene together, right? Well, not really, but the final Harry Potter scene for the trio of Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint is actually quite fitting, as it’s a green-screen shot of all three heroes leaping onto a mat – as if to show the three of them leaping into their own respective futures now that their time with Harry Potter has finally come to an end. The scene in question doesn’t give anything away, and I’m not sure where it takes place within the film, but ABC Family premiered the behind-the-scenes nugget that shows us what was going on when the three Potter kids… Read More Read Comments

Who Wants to Tour the Harry Potter Movie Set?

Friday, March 4th, 2011

As the Harry Potter film series wraps up this summer, it looks like fans won’t have to say farewell to their good friend Potter right away. In fact, those massive Harry Potter fans will get a chance to experience the film series just as Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint did by traveling to the actual movie sets for a brand spanking new tour that begins in 2012. The tour, which is called The Making of Harry Potter, is being coordinated via Warner Brothers Studio in London (yes, sadly you’ll have to travel across the pond to visit, though I bet it’d be more than worth it for you hardcore Potter addicts). A few of the things they’ll be featuring on the tour are authentic sets, costumes, animatronics, and props, all while getting the opportunity to… Read More Read Comments

‘Harry Potter’ Origins Story to Hit TV?

Thursday, February 17th, 2011

Before you Potter nuts start freaking out thinking the franchise will continue and reboot itself for TV, let us warn you that it’s not what you think. Ever wonder how Harry Potter began – not in terms of the character, but where the idea for Potter came from? Author J.K. Rowling was a struggling single mother when she first came up with the idea for Harry Potter while on a train ride, and now she’s worth over $500 million after penning the 7-book series and assisting on the wildly successful film franchise. Now, after watching young Harry Potter grow up over the course of eight different movies, folks will finally get the chance to see how it all began when a new TV film based on the life story of J.K. Rowling hits the boob tube at some point next year (we… Read More Read Comments
