Success of health reform hinges on hiring 30,000 primary care doctors by 2015

Saturday, February 11th, 2012

Jacob Edwards flips through a manual on skin conditions, diagnosing a rash that looks like chicken pox. Jessica O’Babatunde consults her supervisor on treating an adolescent’s obesity, which is literally off-the-charts. And Julie Krueger peppers 3-year-old Daphauni with questions at her physical: How do you spell your name? What did you eat for breakfast? What’s your favorite vegetable? (Cheese.) Cancer drug shows promise in mouse Alzheimer’s study

Thursday, February 9th, 2012

Mice in the early stage of Alzheimer’s disease had some of their brain abnormalities reversed and their declining mental function restored when they were given low doses of a rarely used cancer drug. The drug, bexarotene, stimulated the removal of beta-amyloid, a substance whose accumulation in the brain appears to be the main cause of Alzheimer’s dementia. After treatment, the animals fared better in tests of memory and social behavior, according to a study published online Thursday by the journal Science. Read full article > >

Editorial Board: The U.S. must do more for Guatemala over STD study

Wednesday, February 8th, 2012

IN THE FALL of 2010, the Obama administration acknowledged a shocking truth: From 1946 through 1948, officials working in Guatemala for the U.S. Public Health Service conducted tests on some 5,100 unwitting individuals and deliberately infected at least 1,300 with sexually transmitted diseases. None of the victims — who included prisoners, soldiers, the mentally ill and commercial sex workers — consented to this barbaric treatment. At least 83 people died, and many suffered permanent damage. Read full article > >

Alexandra Petri: Komen Foundation’s lamentable choice

Thursday, February 2nd, 2012

Forget the whole kerfuffle in which the Susan G. Komen Foundation stopped its donations to Planned Parenthood , an organization that provides 4 million breast exams annually .
