A former Marine corporal who repeatedly braved enemy fire in attempting to rescue four comrades in Taliban-infested eastern Afghanistan has been selected to receive the Medal of Honor, the highest award given to members of the armed services, the White House announced Friday. Dakota Meyer, a former turret gunner and scout sniper from Kentucky, is only the third living veteran of the Afghan and Iraqi conflicts to be chosen for the honor, and he is the first living Marine to be designated for the award since 1973. Newest US aircraft carrier to be named John F. Kennedy; second named for late president

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus says the nation’s next aircraft carrier will be named the John F. Kennedy. Mabus announced the honor Sunday in memory of the 35th president. The nuclear-powered ship will be built at Newport News Shipbuilding in Virginia. Mabus said the naming of the next Gerald R. Ford-class carrier in Kennedy’s honor pays tribute to the late president’s service in the Navy. Obama awards Medal of Honor posthumously to two Korean War veterans

During a somber ceremony Monday, President Obama bestowed the Medal of Honor posthumously upon two Army privates — Anthony T. Kaho’ohanohano of Pukalani, Hawaii, and Henry Svehla of Belleville, N.J. Both died in the Korean War.
