Jon Will’s gift

Wednesday, May 2nd, 2012

W hen Jonathan Frederick Will was born 40 years ago — on May 4, 1972, his father’s 31st birthday — the life expectancy for people with Down syndrome was about 20 years. That is understandable. Nonplussed, they said they thought that is what parents do with newborns. Not doing so was, however, still considered an acceptable choice for parents who might prefer to institutionalize or put up for adoption children thought to have necessarily bleak futures. Whether warehoused or just allowed to languish from lack of stimulation and attention, people with Down syndrome, not given early and continuing interventions, were generally thought to be incapable of living well, and hence usually did not live as long as they could have. Wednesday, April 11th, 2012

Monday night’s performance show ended on a dramatic note as “Little House on the Prairie” actress Melissa Gilbert was whisked off to the hospital after hitting her head during her paso doble with Maksim Chmerkovskiy. She tweeted later that she was diagnosed with a minor concussion and whiplash , but there were so many questions. Our unrealistic attitudes about death, through a doctor’s eyes

Friday, February 17th, 2012

I know where this phone call is going. I’m on the hospital wards, and a physician in the emergency room downstairs is talking to me about an elderly patient who needs to be admitted to the hospital. The patient is new to me, but the story is familiar: He has several chronic conditions — heart failure, weak kidneys, anemia, Parkinson’s and mild dementia — all tentatively held in check by a fistful of medications. He’s been falling more frequently, and his appetite has fallen off, too. Now a stroke threatens to topple this house of cards. Read full article > >
