Amnesty International Says Bahrain Court Is “Toying” With Life of Hunger Striker

(New York) – Amnesty International today condemned the delaying tactics of a Bahrain court — after the second postponement of an appeals hearing for 14 jailed activists — in light of the critical condition of prominent activist Addulhadi al-Khawaja, who is on his 75th day of a hunger strike. The human rights organization said Bahrain is “toying” with al-Khawaja’s life and demanded his release, along with the other 13 activists.

BEIRUT — An uneasy calm descended on Syria on Thursday indicating that both the government and rebels were keeping their promises to observe a U.N.-brokered cease-fire which went into effect at dawn. “Everywhere is quiet,” said Rami Abdelrahman of the British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which monitors reports of violence on a daily basis. “We have no shooting or shelling in all of Syria.” Read full article > >
