Three thrill-supplying destinations and the sporting gear to go with them Even as our hemisphere finally begins to thaw, we at Cool Hunting think that everyone who’s suffered countless blizzards, waist-high slush and bone-chilling cold deserves a break. For sun-worshippers, powder junkies or anyone in between, we put together our latest favorite getaways and the accoutrements—classic products with exceptional design—that complement the locales we’ve found and make these destinations truly next-level. Surf Costa Rica’s secret break with handmade wooden boards Puerto Viejo, Costa Rica: Salsa Brava Break Puerto Viejo, a village on Costa Rica’s Caribbean coast (about three hours from the country’s capital, San Jose), attracts diehard surfers who are looking for a more relaxed vibe than that of the often-crowded spots on the Pacific. Salsa Brava, a break that has been called Costa Rica’s heaviest and best, provides the main draw to the area while still remaining relatively untouched. Surfers can expect swells that are head-high to triple overhead (swell is biggest from December through March) at Salsa Brava, a name that loosely translates to “fierce sauce.” 42 Surfboards If you’re going to surf an epic break, then it’s essential to have a board worthy of such a storied wave. Hand-shaped in Oregon, the products crafted by 42 Surfboards more than stand up to the challenge. Shaper Lars Bergstr

Bespoken Fall/Winter 2011

Ruggedly nautical looks meet Bespoken’s fine British tailoring in their latest collection A great-grandfather who served in the British Royal Navy are at the seafaring heart of Bespoken ‘s menswear collection recently presented at New York’s Fashion Week. “The pieces in this collection were inspired by the details of these soldiers’ attire, how they carried themselves through hardship and the natural wear of their tailored goods while working at sea,” they explain. Nautical pieces like a reversible seaman’s jacket, a sailor shirt and fisherman knits rakishly straddle the literal and the nostalgic. Headed by the Fayeds and the Goncalves, two sets of brothers, Bespoken draws from rich sartorial tradition. The Fayed family owns the British clothier Turnbull & Asser , and the brothers take advantage of the archives at their fingertips, selecting some patterns from the Victorian era. Heritage is also an operative word for the textiles; yarns for the knitwear are from Scotland’s J.C. Rennie & Co., and suiting and fabrics are supplied by Harris Tweed and British Millerain. Bespoken, now headquartered in New York, tapped the city’s revered milliner Worth & Worth for the line of seaworthy hats in the collection. However, the label remains resolutely British: “[W]e will always defer to our British heritage for foundation.” A great-grandfather who served in the British Royal Navy are at the seafaring heart of Bespoken ‘s menswear collection recently presented at New York’s Fashion Week. “The pieces in this collection were inspired by the details of these soldiers’ attire, how they carried themselves through hardship and the natural wear of their tailored goods while working at sea,” they explain. Mokasser

Thursday, January 20th, 2011

Homegrown Norwegian furniture-makers keep it local The three young partners behind Oslo-based furniture studio Mokasser —Karl Marius Sveen, Roger Sveian and Paul Van Wonderen—keep their business entirely local by designing and producing their collection all in Norway. With a nationwide decrease in furniture manufacturing, Marius tells Cool Hunting, “Lots of manufacturers are moving a big part of their production out of Norway to survive and to compete with prizes. Mokasser is still able to manufacture all parts in Norway, mostly because of being a high-end company, with good finishes and a focus on quality in every product. We also have a close and constant contact with the customers, trying to meet their needs regarding choice of upholstery.” Thanks to their education and experience, the group has a strong background in the Norwegian furniture industry. The clean shapes and the playful colors of each product however, are the work of Nora Furuholmen , Christian S

Gifts Inspired by Amy Sedaris

Thursday, December 16th, 2010

Our selection of imaginative gifts in homage to one of our favorite comediennes In celebration of the resourceful comedian’s upcoming appearance at the Cool Hunting pop up Monday, 20 December 2011— where she will sign her book “Simple Times: Crafts for Poor People ” from 7-9pm—we’ve selected items from our Gift Guide that channel her sensibility. If none of these items get your goat, a flip through “Simple Times” will provide you with plenty of innovative ideas on how to make this joyous (read: stressful) holiday season a bit brighter. Sedaris draws on nature for many of her ideas, and the Campfire Incense Burner is a clever trinket that serves as a reminder of the outdoors inside. Nothing goes better with incense than a healthy peace pipe, packed with Good Fight and Cool Hunting Smoker’s Blend , a tobacco alternative or herbal enhancement for those times when you need a little smokable something to get more creative. Show off your artistic prowess with a personalized case made from one of designer Amy Holbrook’s Needlepoint iPod and iPhone Kits , or gift the kit itself to your favorite crafter. A quirky headpiece you think you could probably make on your own, Tom Scott’s Hairy Visor is actually an intricately-knitted accessory that any old-school yarn freak or Sedaris-wannabe would love to adorn. The Double Rainbow Maker is a gift that would not only brighten up someone’s day, but it reminds us of Sedaris’ continual support of gay rights with its symbolic display of light when attached to any window. One of the most hilarious women in recent history, we think she’d approve of these Pop Culture Pencils boasting funny phrases like “Why Is Alec Baldwin So Cool” and “Why It’s Time For Lost To End.” Not one to shy away from costume-inspired apparel or bold colors, the Yellow Melissa and Triton Clogh Clog made from recycled/recyclable Melflex is a Sedaris-inspired shoe bound to turn heads. A writer herself, we’re sure she appreciates a good book and David Rakoff’s witty semi-autobiographical tome ” Half Empty ” would be appreciated by anyone with a refreshingly kooky personality. While her own kids and pets are reportedly of the imaginary sorts, nothing encourages a child or cat to dream like a cape for the little ones and some catnip for Whiskers. Our faves are this year are the Little Hero Capes , which protect tykes from the elements of the human world as they embark on a creative journey and the Severed Leg Catnip Toy , an offbeat gift that your frisky feline is sure to love.

CH Editions: Happy Goat

Wednesday, December 15th, 2010

Goat milk caramel sauce blended with Macallan scotch for delicious drizzling When the San Francisco confectioner Happy Goat brought their deliciously artisinal caramels to the NYC Food Fair earlier this year, all it took was one bite before we were hooked. Using locally-sourced, free-range goat milk and Madagascan bourbon vanilla beans, founder Michael Winnike and a few friends mix up each batch in traditional copper pots for an addictive treat that is naturally lower in fat. Also, because goat milk is low-lactose and the closest in nature to mother’s milk, the caramels are also easier on the lactose intolerant. After a few months of enjoying the caramels on a pretty regular basis, we wondered what they would taste like with a little Scotch mixed in—because, who wouldn’t want that? We connected Winnike with our friends at The Macallan , who were happy to help craft what has become one of the richest, most complex caramel sauces we’ve ever tasted. The limited-edition jar sells exclusively from our Cool Hunting for Gap pop up shop for $19 each. After experimenting with the sauce on a few different foods, we recommend adding it to a cappucino, dipping apples in it or drizzling over any dessert in need of a little extra zing.

Nazis Everywhere

Tuesday, December 14th, 2010

As a way of giving back to the community, Goldblog is going to start compiling lists of people who are not Nazis but who have nevertheless been called Nazis in public, as a way of proving the obvious point, which is that people reaching for insults should find something better than Nazi. Those people who are, in fact, bona fide Nazis, don’t count, of course. This project, coordinated by Elizabeth Weingarten, the deputy director of the Goldblog Fake-Nazi Hunting Unit, was inspired by Fox News President Roger Ailes, who called NPR executives Nazis for firing Juan Williams. I disagreed with the firing of Juan Williams, but I’ve met many NPR executives, and I can say that they are not Nazis, in part because I don’t think they would look good in uniforms, and in part because they’re a lot of Jews over there at NPR (did I just say that?) and Jews tend not to be Nazis, except for a couple I won’t name. Here is the beginning of the list. I am including on this list not only people who have been labeld “Nazi,” but people who have been accused of using Nazi-like tactics, or having Hitlerish personalities, or physical attributes that remind their accusers of Nazis, or who smell like Nazis. Feel free to mail in other examples of fake Nazis in America, and I will post them: 1. Before the midterms elections, California’s Governor-Elect Jerry Brown said Meg Whitman was using Nazi-like tactics in her campaign. “It’s like Goebbels…Goebbels invented this kind of propaganda,” Brown said. 2. Josh Green called Rich Iott a Nazi impersonator …oh, wait… 3. In August 2009, Rush Limbaugh compared President Obama to Hitler. “Adolf Hitler, like Barack Obama, also ruled by dictate,” he said. 4. Rob Reiner, on Bill Maher’s “Real Time,” compared members of the Tea Party to Nazi followers. “My fear is that the Tea Party gets a charismatic leader,” he explained. “Because all they’re selling is fear and anger. And that’s all Hitler sold.” 5. Glenn Beck said, among other things , that George Soros helped “send the Jews” to “death camps,” and “saw people into gas chambers.” If I didn’t know better, I would say he’s calling Soros a Nazi. 6.  Ben Shapiro called Rahm Emanuel a “kapo,” or a concentration camp prisoner who helped Nazis, in his syndicated column.  7. In Newt Gingrich’s latest book, he writes that President Obama’s “secular-socialist machine represents as great a threat to America as Nazi Germany or the Soviet Union once did.” 8. Glenn Beck also called the Chicago Bears’ Brian Urlacher a “Neo-Nazi” this summer. 9. In April, Rep. Connie Mack of Florida said the enforcement of Arizona’s immigration law reminds him of Nazi Germany . “This law of ‘frontier justice’ — where law enforcement officials are required to stop anyone based on ‘reasonable suspicion’ that they may be in the country illegally — is reminiscent of a time during World War II when the Gestapo in Germany stopped people on the street and asked for their papers without probable cause,” Mack said. 10.Thomas Sowell, in his column, compared Obama to Hitler. 11. Richard Land, the President of the Southern Baptist Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission, said healthcare reform measures are just like “what the Nazis did.” 12. Pamela Geller wrote an article called “Obama Goes Full-On Nazi,” and once photoshopped Elena Kagan into a Nazi uniform. Also, I think she thinks that I myself am a Nazi, though the only thing she’s actually called me is “Jewicidal Jihadi.” Please, Goldblog readers, send me more Nazis!

High-tech boomboxes, a turntable and a classic watch—all limited editions up for auction just in time for the holidays by Vic Reznik Of the series of limited-edition collaborative products that we introduced this season, a few are so rare that we couldn’t even offer them for sale. Instead, we present them here for your bidding pleasure. From the shores of Lake Neuchatel to the Cool Hunting pop up shop at 680 Fifth Avenue, the Marvin Toujours Malton 160s was only produced in an edition of eight. The Malton 160, handcrafted for Cool Hunting, celebrates the reintroduction of Marvin to the U.S. market after a hiatus that started over a decade ago, and one of them is now available through the eBay auction. Proceeds will benefit Animal Haven Shelter , a New York City nonprofit dedicated to finding a loving home for abandoned cats and dogs. The auction is going on now, so hurry before this limited edition becomes unavailable! Our other auction items involve a product that you can’t get your hands on until later in 2011. TDK’s new produce range, called Life On Record, includes a three-speaker boombox with a 6-inch subwoofer as well as two 6-inch coaxial drivers that can deliver a robust range of sounds. In addition the line includes a two-speaker boombox with an integrated equalizer and shoulder strap for those warmer picnic-ready days. TDK further realizes their vision of bringing old-school chic into 2011 with the limited-edition turntable they’re pre-releasing through the auction. The new-age music-players will be available next year, but through our charity auction benefiting Musicians On Call, you can be the first kid on the block paying homage to Radio Raheem with editions customized in green leather by leather maestro Mathieu Brown .

CH Edition: Jill Platner

Our limited-edition Jill Platner bracelet and video premiere event Crafting gorgeously organic shapes in her SoHo, NYC studio for nearly two decades, designer Jill Platner uses old-school artisan techniques to make modern jewelry that looks as good as it feels to wear it. The Massachusetts native moved to NYC to study at Parsons, where she took up metal-smithing and began realizing her true passion. An avid surfer, Jill integrates her passion for the outdoors into her designs and all of her work is sturdy enough to withstand an active lifestyle. Unexpected materials like strong Tenara thread, both UV ray- and salt water-resistant, make her jewelry at once rugged and comfortable to wear. We’re excited to include several pieces by the talented designer in our pop up shop , and having been a fan for over a decade, I’m psyched to have collaborated with Jill for our CH Editions collection. Re-envisioning her signature rawhide bracelet, we worked together to introduce a dove grey leather to her trademark sterling silver toggle clasp for 12 extended-length versions. The limited-edition bracelets sell from our online shop for $205, but be sure to attend our dedicated event at the Cool Hunting for Gap pop up tomorrow, Wednesday, 8 December 2010, to catch the premiere of our behind-the-scenes video of Jill Platner and her studio.

CH Edition: Jambox

Win our Jambox speaker, beginning with a launch party at our NYC pop up When the Jawbone team stopped by Cool Hunting a few weeks back to show us their Bluetooth-compatible portable speaker—dubbed the Jambox—naturally we had initial reservations about just how powerful the tiny speaker system could really be. After a few listens, and learning more about how its clever technology is perfectly geared to seamlessly move from conference room to coffee table, we were hooked. So much so that we asked the designers ( Yves B
