OZZIE GUILLEN has a gift for offensive remarks. In 2006, while manager of the Chicago White Sox, Mr. Guillen employed an anti- gay slur to refer to a local columnist; he issued an apology to the gay community — although not to the writer himself — and was ordered by Major League Baseball to take sensitivity training. He has trumpeted his penchant for getting drunk after away games. While criticizing harsh measures to crack down on illegal immigrants, Mr. Guillen opined that immigrants are “workaholics” and that many Americans are “lazy.” Read full article > >

TEHRAN — Iran’s outgoing parliament summoned President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad for an unprecedented grilling Wednesday, but he spent much of the session deflecting their questions with jokes and mockery. After considering the move for months, the parliament, which has impeachment power, called in Ahmadinejad to answer accusations of economic mismanagement, illegal appointments and other allegations. Apparently encouraged by victories in the March 2 parliamentary elections , hard-line lawmakers seized the opportunity to summon the president before the legislature for the first time in the Islamic Republic’s history. The new 290-member parliament is slated to take office in May. Read full article > >

THERE IS a certain belt-and-suspenders quality to the ban on insider trading by members of Congress that was just passed by the Senate . Current law may prohibit such practices. But to the extent that there is ambiguity, it is important, for purposes of both potential prosecution and public perception, to make clear that such activity is indeed illegal. If anything, the measure does not go far enough. Read full article > >
