Major Internet service providers cooperating with NSA on monitoring traffic

Three of the nation’s largest Internet service providers are cooperating with a new National Security Agency program to sift through the traffic of major defense contractors with the goal of blocking cyberattacks by foreign adversaries, senior defense and industry officials say. The novel program, which began last month on a voluntary, trial basis, relies on sophisticated NSA data sets to identify malicious programs slipped into the vast stream of Internet data flowing to the nation’s largest defense firms. Such attacks, including one last month against Bethesda-based Lockheed Martin, are nearly constant as rival nations and terrorist groups seek access to U.S. military secrets. Read full article > >

Police: Deputy kills ex, shoots trooper

But the White House Situation Room is enjoying a boomlet these days, after hosting one of the most intense briefing sessions in U.S. history — including one of the most scrutinized photographs of the Obama presidency — during the raid on Osama bin Laden’s compound two weeks ago. Now, President Obama plans to pay homage to the site, which is actually several rooms. He’ll hold a 50th-anniversary ceremony dedicating one of its conference rooms to its creator, President John F. Kennedy, on Friday. National security adviser Thomas E. Donilon will make remarks and introduce Obama, who will unveil a plaque and host an unusual Situation Room reception including guests Caroline Kennedy; her son, Jack Schlossberg; and nine former national security advisers, an administration official said. Jim Lehrer to step down from daily broadcast at ‘NewsHour’

Jim Lehrer, who has anchored PBS’s “NewsHour” program for 36 years, said Thursday morning that he is stepping down from the daily broadcast, ending the longest run of a national anchorman. Lehrer, 76, said he would leave as anchor on June 6 but would continue to appear on Fridays to moderate the show’s weekly news analysis segment featuring a panel of journalists. He will also continue to be involved with the program’s producer, MacNeil/Lehrer Productions, based in Arlington. In addition to his familiar role on PBS, the widely respected Lehrer may be best known to American audiences as the moderator of presidential debates. He has handled that job 11 times, including one of the debates between Sens. Barack Obama and John McCain in 2008. Read full article > >
