POLITICIZATION IS THE Achilles’ heel of central banking. Economic decision-makers depend on the central bank to make monetary policy based on strictly neutral criteria. Once the idea takes hold that interest rates follow the short-term needs of elected officials, confidence evaporates. Institutional checks and balances can manage the trade-off between democratic accountability and central-bank independence, but only up to a point. There is no substitute for a political culture in which parties respect the Federal Reserve’s role and see its independence as serving their mutual interests. Read full article > >
