Why the World Bank top post will go to (another) American

Thursday, March 22nd, 2012

The deadline for the White House to nominate a candidate to lead the World Bank is 6 p.m. Friday. They will choose someone. And that someone will be an American. At first glance, this seems absurd. The World Bank exists to serve developing nations. All of its operations take place in developing nations. And so you might think it would make sense to name someone from a developing nation to lead the institution. That’s certainly how at least some developing nations feel. Read full article > >

Editorial: Penn State faces more questions about Sandusky case

Tuesday, November 15th, 2011

PENN STATE COACH Joe Paterno is gone. So too is the university’s longtime president, Graham Spanier. The Nittany Lions are gearing up for a game this week against Ohio State, having lost Saturday’s home game against Nebraska. Students are refocusing attention on their studies. Things seem to be quieting down after a week in which the State College, Pa., campus was rocked by allegations of child sexual abuse and the institution’s seeming indifference. Nearly one in three low-income young adults without a four-year college degree in the District was unemployed and not in school in 2009, far higher than the national rate, according to a report released Wednesday by the Brookings Institution . But for 2 letters, Georgetown graduation unblemished

Monday, May 23rd, 2011

After days of wet and stormy weather, Georgetown University was able to hold out door commencement ceremonies. Saturday was a glorious day for a graduation. Prominent public figures spoke, and thousands of degrees were awarded. But things fell just short of perfection. The graduation program had a misspelling on the cover. Instead of declaring the name of the institution to be “Georgetown University,” letters were transposed in the latter word. It read “Univeristy.” An unfortunate matter, but it was not clear Sunday whether it was sufficiently consequential to take its place alongside the memorable 2009 episode in which players on the local major league baseball team took the field with uniform shirts reading “N atinals” (instead of Nationals). In Europe, a first call for IMF chief Strauss-Kahn to quit

Tuesday, May 17th, 2011

Austria’s finance minister called Tuesday for the head of the International Monetary Fund, Dominique Strauss-Kahn, to consider resigning. It was the most direct call so far for Strauss-Kahn to step down since his arrest on sexual assault charges in New York this weekend. At a gathering of European finance ministers in Brussels, Maria Fekter said Strauss-Kahn “has to figure out for himself that he is hurting the institution,” wire services reported. Also Tuesday, Spain’s finance chief, Elena Salgado, called the allegations against the IMF chief “extraordinarily serious” and added that “if I had to show my solidarity and support for someone, it would be toward the woman who has been assaulted.” Read full article > >
