URBANDALE, Iowa — On the evening of the Iowa caucuses , Joe Burns, a 71-year-old convenience store manager here, came to Walnut Hills Elementary School in sharply contested Dallas County with the intention of making up his mind. Burns and his wife, Mary, who are among Iowa’s vast ranks of undecided voters, followed a line past lost-and-found boxes filled with mittens and scarves and a mural that read “It’s About Respect, Respect Iowa.” In the school’s cafeteria, the county recorder, wearing a blue Mitt Romney sweater, registered voters and handed Burns a slip of paper with the names of the competing candidates. The Burnses sat at one of the miniature children’s tables and mulled who they wanted to be the next president of the United States. Read full article > >

Paying $700 a month plus utilities for a three-way share in Mount Pleasant might seem too good to give up to the average District renter. Not Kevin Ogorzalek. Living in that apartment for the past five years was indeed a money saver for the 29-year-old Chicago native, but every dollar — $30,000 to be exact — was tucked away with the intention of one day buying a home. And Ogorzalek did just that last month, closing on a two-bedroom, two-bathroom condominium at 2910 Georgia Ave. NW in Pleasant Plains. Read full article > >

TOKYO — The new Japanese government is trying to earn back trust from the United States, its most important ally, by showing support for initiatives that recent prime ministers in Tokyo have let languish. The ideas include support for a multi-nation free-trade agreement and for allowing easier exports of Japanese weapons technology, ventures that have strong support in Washington. New Japanese leaders have also signaled their intention to carry out a long-stalled agreement with Washington that would put the U.S. Marine presence in Okinawa on a more solid footing. Everyday leather bags with minimalist-luxe appeal Brothers Tim and Dan Joo created their bag label Haerfest with the intention of designing “modern basics that age well.” With four simple styles crafted in durable materials like leather and brass, the unisex line boasts equally straightforward style names such as A1 Back Pack (shown above). While the A1 retains the classic backpack shape in sultry leather, the A2 Bucket Bag riffs on the roll-top trend with its open top and multifunctional straps. Together, they sling over shoulders as one strap, or for a more streamlined approach, separate them to keep it casual. The A3 Shoulder Sack, definitely the most feminine of the collection, flattens completely making it a useful bag to pack on your next trip. For extended journeys, the A4 Overnight Duffel mods a classic but keeps it functional. The tubular shape makes it easy to stow, leather flaps secure hidden pockets and its simple leather exterior adds an alluring Bond element—sure to get you bumped up to first. Most styles come in a variety of muted colors, which can be seen in full from the Haerfest website. Since the collection just launched, stockists are still undetermined but to get your hands on a bag, contact Haerfest . Prices span $380-550, depending on the model and materials.
