BERLIN — Germany’s top security officials say they are formally launching an investigation to determine whether a far right party should be banned over its antidemocratic convictions. Germany’s Interior Minister Hans-Peter Friedrich said Friday he reached agreement with his counterparts from the country’s 16 states to gather material for a trial seeking to ban the NPD party. They say the National Democratic Party is “inhuman, hostile to democracy and anti-Semitic.” Read full article > >

One thing about raising cattle — cows do what they are supposed to do when they are supposed to do it. Unfortunately, John W. Wendt, who works with his herd every day, can’t say the same thing about the Office of Personnel Management . Until almost a year ago, Wendt also labored for Uncle Sam. The retired federal employee now works on his cattle and grain farm in Ledger, Mont., a sparsely populated place about 50 miles south of the Canadian border. He put in 16 years with the government before retiring as a heavy equipment operator from Interior’s Bureau of Reclamation last December. Read full article > >

The Army and the Department of the Interior violated federal procurement law when they awarded a contract to an Alaska native corporation and allowed it to pass on most of the work to other companies, federal auditors have found. United Solutions and Services was hired by the Army in September 2008 under a $250 million contract awarded without competition. It was asked to perform a variety of tasks, including launching a global campaign to prevent sexual assaults in the military. Though the corporation was tiny and operated out of an executive’s home in Delaware, it qualified for the no-bid deal because it was 51 percent owned by a native corporation called Cape Fox. The contract was managed for the Army by an acquisition office at the Interior Department. Read full article > >

As gas prices nationally approach $4 a gallon, the House passed Thursday a measure that would require the Interior Department to conduct four offshore oil and gas lease sales in the Gulf of Mexico and off the coast of Virginia. The bill, H.R. 1230, passed on a 266-to-149 vote , with 33 Democrats joining all but two Republicans present in voting yes. Republicans have cast the measure as a step toward easing the country’s rising gas prices by speeding up oil and gas exploration in the gulf. The administration, Republicans have argued, has not acted quickly enough to approve lease sales after last year’s Deepwater Horizon disaster , which killed 11 people and leaked an estimated 200 million gallons of oil into the Gulf.
