Can Apple make a more ethical iPhone?

In the world of global manufacturing, it seems that multinational corporations are destined to take their turn in the sweatshop spotlight. Apple’s turn, merely the latest, has taken an unusual twist. Chief executive Tim Cook, on a trip to China this past week, visited a Foxconn factory and released photos of grinning workers on the iPhone production line. Cook’s trip came after months of investigations, centered on Foxconn, of Apple’s alleged sweatshop conditions. As the story gained momentum — in part because of a theatrical performance by a man named Mike Daisey, who has since apologized for fabricating much of his narrative — Apple hired a third-party monitoring group, the Fair Labor Association (FLA), to audit working conditions at its factories. The FLA issued a report Thursday citing widespread overtime abuses and subsistence pay at Foxconn, and the manufacturer and Apple pledged to do better. Read full article > >

Steve Jobs originally wanted Apple to be able to operate the iPhone without help from carriers. That’s what John Stanton, a venture capitalist and wireless industry veteran, told his audience at a Seattle speech Monday, IDG News reported . According to Stanton, when Jobs was first percolating ideas about the handset from 2005-2007, he discussed the plausibility of going around carriers and using the unlicensed spectrum that WiFi networks rely on for the phones. Walmart introduces new iPhone, iPad apps

Walmart has unveiled new apps for the iPad and the iPhone that allow shoppers to browse inventory at their local store, scan products and create voice-activated shopping lists. The iPad app debuted last week and the response has been “phenomenal,” said Gibu Thomas, Walmart’s senior vice president of mobile and digital. The new version of the iPhone app includes both a bar code scanner and a QR code scanner. The new voice-activated shopping list can also help customers find coupons and provides a running tally of the bill. Read full article > >
