Heather E. Henderson sat down for lunch one recent afternoon at Bourbon Steak, the Georgetown Four Seasons restaurant where she’s a regular. She ordered raw oysters, Singapore noodles and one of the head bartender’s house-made apple sodas. Then, she engaged her lunch companion: the iPhone that has commanded — or at least divided — Henderson’s attention on countless eating excursions. Read full article > >

Apple customers are not happy after having problems upgrading to the new version of the iPhone’s mobile operating system , iOS 5, on Wednesday. Taking to Twitter, Facebook and Apple’s support forums, users reported that their phones and tablets had been wiped — or worse, bricked. So many people were having problems with the update that the upgrading error message, “error 3200,” nabbed a spot as a worldwide trending topic on Twitter. Read full article > >

Early reviews of the iPhone 4S may have been uniformly great, bordering on glowing. But the best part of Wednesday’s coverage of Apple’s latest has been reviewers’ transcripts of their conversations with Siri — the personal assistant. Initial reports revealed that Siri’s got answers for just about everything from pop culture queries to math problems. She’s even got an answer to the eternal question, “What is the meaning of life?” that pays homage to Monty Python . But she’s also shown she has a good sense of humor. Read full article > >

SAN FRANCISCO — Apple fans are amped. The computer and gadget maker is expected to announce a new, more powerful version of its wildly popular smartphone this week — more than a year after it unveiled the iPhone 4. Last week, Apple Inc. e-mailed invitations to a media event at its headquarters in Cupertino on Tuesday morning. The invite says “let’s talk iPhone,” implying the normally secretive company intends to show off the latest version of the device. In the past, Apple has typically introduced a new iPhone during the summer, but this year it was expected to hold off until the fall. Read full article > >

Apple has confirmed that it is holding an iPhone event next Tuesday, sending invitations to members of the tech press. The invites read, “Let’s Talk iPhone.” The event will start at 10 a.m. Pacific time and will take place at Apple’s headquarters in Cupertino, Calif. The invitation doesn’t mention the iPhone 5 by name, and offers no clues about whether the company will launch a revamped iPhone 4, a completely redesigned iPhone 5 or both. Read full article > >

SAN FRANCISCO — Computers, like humans, can learn. But when Google tries to fill in your search box based only on a few keystrokes, or your iPhone predicts words as you type a text message, it’s only a narrow mimicry of what the human brain is capable. The challenge in training a computer to behave like a human brain is technological and physiological, testing the limits of computer and brain science. But researchers from IBM Corp. say they’ve made a key step toward combining the two worlds. The company announced Thursday that it has built two prototype chips that it says process data more like how humans digest information than the chips that now power PCs and supercomputers. Nearly a year ago, I wrote a post entitled “ Is Android Surging Only Because Apple Is Letting It? “. Not surprisingly, it fired people up. About 1,000 comments later, there was a full-on fanboy war between the Apple and Google sides. But the point was actually something we can look back on. Was Android surging ahead of the iPhone in the United States because Apple only had a deal with AT&T? Let’s revisit, shall we? At the point that post was written, the Verizon iPhone was just a rumor. It was an oft-cited rumor, but still just a rumor. Apple had a deal with one carrier in the U.S., AT&T. Meanwhile, there were Android devices on all four major U.S. carriers. And by all accounts, the ones being sold by Verizon were doing the best in terms of sales. Read full article > >

Judge Stephen G. Milliken was waiting at the Gallery Place Metro station for a train Thursday morning when a youth snacked his iPhone from his hand. The D.C. Superior Court judge isn’t alone in having his electronic device stolen. Metro Transit Police said they’ve seen a spike in “snatch-and-grab” robberies of iPhones and similar devices. “We’ve had a great increase in the snatching of iPhones and iPads over the last couple of years, not just here but in transit systems across the country,” Metro Transit Police Chief Michael Taborn said. Embarrassed at how my Spanish had deteriorated over the years, I recently decided to download a few translator apps for iPad and iPod Touch before a trip to Spain. I browsed around the App Store, downloading English-Spanish editions of Google Translate , SpeechTrans and Jibbigo , three of the most popular apps. I briefly considered iLingual, the one where you take a photo of your mouth and then hold the iPhone or iPod Touch up to your face while the screen animates your lips in the foreign language. Thankfully, for my dignity’s sake, I couldn’t find iLingual for Spanish — only French, German and Arabic. Read full article > >
