It is a curious case in the annals of the FBI: The bureau considered a sting operation against then-House Speaker Newt Gingrich after sifting through allegations from a notorious arms dealer that a $10 million bribe might get Congress to lift the Iraqi arms embargo. The U.S. military has stopped announcing its plans for turning over facilities to the Iraqi government because of concerns that insurgents were using the information to stage attacks, a top American general said Thursday. “As bases close, some adversaries try to take advantage and attack us. . . . Some attacked on transition day,” Maj. Gen. Thomas W. Spoehr, deputy commanding general of U.S. Forces-Iraq, said during a telephone news conference from Iraq. Read full article > >

BAGHDAD — Bomb blasts ripped through three Iraqi cities Monday morning, killing 38 people, including 34 who were gathered at a market in the southern city of Kut and shattering what had been a relatively peaceful holy month of Ramadan. The violence struck from the northern city of Kirkuk to the southern cities of Najaf and Kut, and emphasized the persistent ability of insurgents to wreak havoc at a time when Iraqi officials are weighing whether they are able to protect the country without the assistance of American troops.
