ISLAMABAD, Pakistan — Every winter, the capital of Pakistan’s Islamic republic is overrun by what is many Muslims’ worst nightmare: sounds of screeching wild pigs. Motivated by hunger, the reviled animals descend each night from neighboring hills to feed on the garbage bins of Islamabad’s most exclusive addresses — from high-end hotels to the capital’s embassies and even the president’s residence. On their way to feeding grounds pigs cause traffic accidents and send locals hurrying for cover. Some Islamabad residents have reportedly been injured or even killed by belligerent hogs. KABUL — The allied commander in Afghanistan reported modest “progress” Tuesday in efforts to repair military relations with Pakistan, although he said he had received no indications that Islamabad would reopen crucial supply routes anytime soon. Marine Gen. John R. Allen, commander of U.S. and NATO troops in Afghanistan, said he spoke by telephone Monday with Gen. Ashfaq Kayani, the Pakistani army chief, for the first time since Nov. 26, when a U.S. airstrike killed two dozen Pakistani soldiers in a cross-border attack. Read full article > >

PESHAWAR, Pakistan — A Pakistani Taliban spokesman denied Sunday an earlier announcement by the militant group’s deputy chief that it was holding peace talks with the government. The conflicting claims are a clear sign of splits within the movement, which could make it harder for Islamabad to strike a deal to end the violent insurgency gripping the country. At the same time, the cracks could make it easier to suppress the insurgency militarily. Read full article > >

KABUL, Afghanistan — Afghanistan’s president vowed Wednesday to confront the government in Islamabad over a devastating suicide bombing against a Shiite shrine in Kabul that he said originated on Pakistani soil. At least 56 people were killed in Tuesday’s bombing at a shrine where hundreds had gathered to mark the Shiite holy day of Ashoura. One American citizen was among the dead. A second bomb hit a Shiite vehicle procession in a northern city at roughly the same time, killing four people. Read full article > >

ISLAMABAD — Pakistan is preventing foreign journalists and other visitors from getting close to the house of slain al-Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden ahead of the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. The Danish Ambassador to Pakistan and his wife, and two French journalists, were among several people detained this week in Abbottabad — the Pakistani garrison town that was bin Laden’s last hideout. They were held briefly before being allowed to return to the capital, Islamabad, police in the northern town said Friday. Read full article > >

The Pakistani town of Abbottabad seems to have been the perfect place to “ hide in plain sight .” Not only did officers at the Pakistani military academy there apparently miss spotting Osama bin Laden so did a team of U.S. Special Forces trainers that, according to Pakistani officials, was based there from September to December 2008. The “Where’s Waldo?” aspect of the hunt for bin Laden — who turns out to have been living since 2005 just a few hours’ drive north of Islamabad — has worsened the mistrust between America and Pakistan. Pakistani anger over the unilateral U.S. attack is indicated by the fact that someone just “outed” the CIA station chief in Islamabad for the second time in a year. Read full article > >
