Redskins continue their search for stability at quarterback

Sunday, October 23rd, 2011

The line from Joe Theismann’s last season as the Washington Redskins ’ quarterback to John Beck’s first start in that role on Sunday is looping and squiggly, a toddler’s scribble on the paper placemat in a diner. It connects Super Bowl winners ( Doug Williams , Mark Rypien) to past-their-prime stars (Mark Brunell, Donovan McNabb ) to Pro Bowlers (Rypien, Jay Schroeder, Gus Frerotte , Brad Johnson) to first-round picks (Heath Shuler, Patrick Ramsey , Jason Campbell) to vagabond veterans (Rex Grossman, Tony Banks) to geez-do-you-remember-him characters (Rob Johnson, John Friesz, so many others). Every single classification of quarterback is represented, except one: the franchise guy. Read full article > >

Tomas Transtomer, Swedish poet, wins Nobel laureate in literature

Thursday, October 6th, 2011

The Swedish Academy selected a Swedish poet on Thursday as the winner of the Nobel Prize for literature, a development likely to elicit two reactions from American readers: Who? And huh? Tomas Transtromer , 80, joined a long list of lesser-known writers who have won the award and its $1.45 million prize since the Nobel committee began handing it out in 1901. In addition to authors familiar to every American schoolchild — Ernest Hemingway, William Faulkner, John Steinbeck — the award has gone to several Swedes over the years, including Eyvind Johnson and Harry Martinson , who shared the award in 1974. That Johnson and Martinson were members of the Swedish Academy, the 18-person committee that selects the literature prize, raised a few eyebrows. Read full article > >

Jack B. Johnson’s rise and fall as Prince George’s county executive

Monday, June 6th, 2011

Alfonso Cornish went to work for the leader of Prince George’s County in 2003, believing that his newly elected boss would set a bright horizon for the country’s most prominent African American suburb. But soon after settling in as a senior adviser, Cornish found himself growing uneasy with then-County Executive Jack B. Johnson (D). Month after month, Johnson doled out jobs and consulting contracts to friends, a number of whom seemed unqualified. Cornish’s discomfort grew when he discovered a security company sweeping Johnson’s office suite for wiretaps, a search that included his boss’s car. Toward the end of Johnson’s first term, a high-ranking colleague told Cornish that the county executive had predicted that he would become wealthy before leaving office. Read full article > >
