John C. Tibbetts’s ‘The Gothic Imagination,’ reviewed by Michael Dirda

Thursday, December 29th, 2011

The cover of “ The Gothic Imagination ” depicts a futuristic city threatened by a glowering satanic figure framed against a starry night sky. While John C. Tibbetts may teach film at the University of Kansas and write often about classical music and theater, that painting — and several drawings scattered throughout his book — make clear that he’s also a talented artist. Still, the key to this volume of “Conversations on Fantasy, Horror and Science Fiction in the Media” can actually be found in Tibbetts’s middle initial, C. Read full article > >

Interstates closed by storm crawling across Great Plains reopen, relieve holiday travelers

Wednesday, December 21st, 2011

TOPEKA, Kan. — Holiday travelers were breathing a sigh of relief Wednesday after a snowstorm that closed interstates across the Great Plains moved out of the region, allowing crews to plow away snow drifts and let stranded motorists leave roadside hotels. The storm was blamed for at least two fatal car accidents as it crawled from eastern New Mexico and Colorado through the Texas Panhandle, Oklahoma and Kansas. The fierce winds and heavy snowfall closed several major roadways before weakening Tuesday as the weather moved into Missouri and toward the Great Lakes. Read full article > >

Obama attacks Republican economic theory: ‘It’s never worked’

Tuesday, December 6th, 2011

President Obama, in one of his most expansive speeches to date, declared on Tuesday that supply-side economics is a failure and called “gaping inequality” across the country a moral shortcoming that is distorting American democracy. Obama’s speech in Kansas was not just another attack on Congress, or a plea to pass his jobs bill. He did not roll out a new, snappy slogan – such as telling the audience that “we can’t wait” to enact new laws. Read full article > >

For Zuzu of ‘It’s a Wonderful Life,’ it wasn’t such a wonderful life afterward

Friday, December 2nd, 2011

“I never saw the movie before,” said Karolyn Grimes , 71, remembering living near Kansas City, Mo., in December 1979 and catching out of the corner of her eye flickering images on the television of familiar faces and places from long ago. Working full time and raising seven children, the 39-year-old Grimes had no time to spare, much less to sit around watching television. But something tugged at her as she saw snatches of snow-clogged streets of small-town America and people she thought she knew. Read full article > >

Emma Sullivan’s potty-mouthed tweet has a lesson for all of us

Wednesday, November 30th, 2011

Emma Sullivan, you’re lucky you’re not my daughter. (Dangerous sentence, I know: My daughters might agree.) If you were my daughter, you’d be writing that letter apologizing to Kansas Gov. Alexandra Petri: Teenager Emma Sullivan and Sam Brownback’s insulting interlude

Monday, November 28th, 2011

“just made mean comments at gov brownback and told him he sucked, in person #heblowsalot.” Thus ran the tweet shot ‘round the world, from Kansas teenager Emma Sullivan after her class visited Brownback’s office (where she did not, in fact, tell him in person that he sucked.) The tweet, a joke, was not supposed to go beyond her friends. But the Internet being the Internet, that is exactly what it did. Read full article > >
