NAIROBI, Kenya — Property prices in Nairobi are soaring, and Somali pirates are getting the blame. The hike in real estate prices in the Kenyan capital has prompted a public outcry and a government investigation this month into property owned by foreigners. The investigation follows allegations that millions of dollars in ransom money paid to Somali pirates are being invested in Kenya, Somalia’s southern neighbor and East Africa’s largest economy.

LONDON — Bahraini middle-distance runner Rashid Ramzi was stripped of his 1,500-meter Olympic gold medal Wednesday and four other athletes were disqualified because of doping at the Beijing Games. Fifteen months after the games, the International Olympic Committee took action against the five athletes who tested positive in April in retroactive tests for CERA, an advanced version of the blood-boosting drug EPO. The Moroccan-born Ramzi was the only gold medalist from Beijing caught using performance-enhancing drugs.

Moderate Republican candidate Dede Scozzafava’s departure from upstate New York’s special congressional election is, senior Democrats predict, bad news for the Democratic Party. Now, conventional wisdom holds that Scozzafava voters will likely head towards the conservative party’s Doug Hoffman or simply stay at home
