Al-Qaeda’s No. 2 leader is killed in Pakistan, U.S. officials say

Al-Qaeda’s No. 2 leader, Atiyah Abd al-Rahman , has been killed in Pakistan , U.S. officials said Saturday — a significant strike against the terrorist group nearly four months after the death of Osama bin Laden . Rahman was killed Aug. 22 in Waziristan, the tribal northwest region of Pakistan, according to a senior administration official who was not authorized to speak by name. The official called his death “a tremendous loss for al-Qaeda” because the group’s new top leader, Ayman al-Zawahiri, “was relying heavily on him to help guide and run the organization, especially since bin Laden’s death.” Read full article > >

I was sitting at work when my Google Chat icon pinged and a coworker said, “I’m sorry.” “For what?” I asked, unaware of a comment he had typed a few minutes earlier. With quick hesitation he filled me in. “I was just saying that they should bomb everyone in Pakistan for hiding bin Laden, but it was just a joke. I didn’t mean sane people like you, just the crazies.”
