Syria agrees to allow international monitors

BEIRUT — Bowing to international pressure, including from long-time ally Russia, Syria on Monday accepted an Arab League plan to allow international monitors into the country to observe a situation that anti-government activists call a bloody crackdown on dissent. Syria has agreed to implement a proposal signed last month by permitting an initial group of monitors to enter Syria within 72 hours and discussing plans for a total of 500 observers to operate across the country. Egyptian military clashes with protesters in Cairo

CAIRO — More than 50 people were injured Friday in violent clashes between rock-throwing protesters and military police . The violence in central Cairo was the worst unrest since clashes last month that left at least 42 people dead. George Washington U. students to get tuition refunded after professor didn’t teach class

WASHINGTON — George Washington University says students who were given “A’’ grades for a course that was never taught will have their tuition for the class refunded. The students in GW’s physician assistant program will still get credit for the course. The chair of the university’s physician assistant department resigned last month after students complained that she never taught two semesters of a course on evidence-based medicine. Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell is seeking federal disaster aid for people in Fairfax and Prince William counties affected by the heavy rains and flooding from last month’s Tropical Storm Lee . The request comes just days after the F ederal Emergency Management Agency denied Virginia’s request for help recovering from the 5.8-magnitude earthquake that struck Aug. 23.
