No one knew John Legend was coming. At least, the students from Duke Ellington School of the Arts didn’t know. The singer-songwriter came by the Kennedy Center on Tuesday morning to participate in the launch of the center’s “What’s Going On . . . NOW” project , a national arts and digital media initiative to both inspire young people to engage in their communities through the arts and to commemorate the 40th anniversary of Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Going On.” Gaye performed the song during the Kennedy Center’s inaugural season in 1972. Simon Cowell told the Hollywood Reporter back in August that an audience of less than 20 million for the launch of his “X Factor” would be a flat-out “disappointment.” Turns out, “X Factor” — which Simon wants to displace his old program, “American Idol,” as the biggest show on TV — attracted 11.9 million viewers Wednesday night as it began its second week on the air. And a week earlier, Simon’s new singing-competition series averaged 12.5 million viewers. Read full article > >

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. — A Russian space station supply ship crashed with a thunderous boom into Siberia minutes after launch Wednesday, rattling NASA and others in this new era without any shuttles to bail out the orbiting outpost. The rocket failed barely a month after NASA’s final space shuttle flight. While the International Space Station has more than enough supplies, the accident threatens to delay the launch of the next crew, just one month away. That’s because the upper stage of the unmanned Soyuz rocket that failed is similar to the ones used to launch astronauts to the station. Read full article > >
