Chinese court sentences veteran rights activist to 9 years in prison for inciting subversion

Friday, December 23rd, 2011

BEIJING — A Chinese court sentenced a veteran activist Friday to nine years in prison for inciting subversion, in what appears to be the most severe punishment handed down in a crackdown to prevent the spread of Arab Spring-style democratic uprisings. Chen Wei was convicted of incitement to subversion over four essays he wrote and published online, said one of his lawyers. He was detained in February amid an extensive government crackdown in response to anonymous online calls urging Chinese to imitate protests in North Africa and the Middle East. Read full article > >

Supreme Court again considers defendants’ right to confront their accusers

Wednesday, December 7th, 2011

The question of what rights criminal defendants have to confront those testifying against them has divided the Supreme Court so deeply and for so long that the justices hardly need the lawyers arguing before them. D.C. area office cleaners fight for better pay and benefits

Saturday, October 8th, 2011

He and eight other cleaners have four hours to do the same amount of vacuuming, trash collection and other janitorial tasks that just a few years ago took 14 people. He would happily work more hours if he could, he said; as a part-timer, he is paid $9 an hour and has scant health-care benefits. Read full article > >

US Supreme Court halts execution of Texas man whose lawyers say race was factor in sentence

Friday, September 16th, 2011

HUNTSVILLE, Texas — The U.S. Supreme Court halted the execution Thursday of a black man convicted of a double murder in Texas 16 years ago after his lawyers contended his sentence was unfair because of a question asked about race during his trial. Duane Buck, 48, was spared from lethal injection when the justices, without extensive comment, said they would review an appeal in his case. Two appeals, both related to a psychologist’s testimony that black people were more likely to commit violence, were before the court. One was granted; the other was denied. Read full article > >
