Support for two online piracy bills in Congress appeared to wane Wednesday after opponents of the legislation staged a dramatic protest in which vast swaths of the Web effectively went dark . Visitors to Wikipedia who tried to search the online encyclopedia’s usually trivia-filled pages were instead greeted by a message informing them that the bills could “fatally damage the free and open Internet.” On Craigslist, those looking to search the classifieds had to first read through a note urging them to contact their representatives to block the bills. And while you could still run searches on Google, a black censorship bar blocked the area where a cheery Google Doodle logo normally resides. Read full article > >

Wikipedia, Reddit and Boing Boing are planning to black out their services Wednesday to protest the Stop Online Piracy Act and the Protect IP Act by showing users the bill’s effect on Web companies. These companies object to language in the bills, which are aimed at stopping online piracy on foreign Web sites, that grant the U.S. government the right to block entire Web sites with copyright-infringing content on them from the Internet. A month after joining Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi in a televised call to fight climate change in 2008, Newt Gingrich pivoted to a much different message: Increase domestic drilling and block legislation aimed at implementing a “cap-and-trade” system to curb carbon pollution. “We could drill here, drill now and pay less,” Gingrich said in a May 2008 video for his now-defunct nonprofit group, American Solutions for Winning the Future. NEW DELHI — Hundreds of anti-corruption campaigners descended on New Delhi and several other Indian cities on Sunday for the third time this year to protest a new draft legislation that they say is powerless to fight corruption. Anna Hazare, the veteran activist who held two public fasts earlier this year, began a symbolic one-day hunger strike early Sunday. He called the new proposal “a betrayal,” and said he would begin a bigger, marathon hunger strike on Dec. 27. Read full article > >

After he left Congress, GOP presidential candidate Newt Gingrich made tens of millions of dollars from corporate clients, who paid his health-care think tank up to $200,000 a year for “access to top transformational leadership across industry and government.” Gingrich also bragged about his success in pushing conservative policies and legislation in Washington during his political exile.
