Troy Brouwer got his first career hat trick, and Alex Ovechkin also scored Friday night as the Washington Capitals held on for a 4-3 victory that handed the Tampa Bay Lightning a sixth straight loss. Ovechkin and Brouwer scored power-play goals in the first 6 minutes, and Brouwer went on to score in the second and third periods for the Capitals, who have won six straight at home and six of eight overall to move back into playoff position in the Eastern Conference. The Capitals outshot the Lightning, 28-24, in Game 1 of the conference semifinals at Verizon Center. They outhit their guests, 28-19, and had the upper hand on faceoffs, too, winning 54 percent of them.

Steve Downie has been a very bad boy. The Tampa Bay Lightning’s winger barreled down the “slot” in front of the Washington Capitals’ net like a crosstown bus, plowing into and over Semyon Varlamov, the Caps’ goalie. In the National Hockey League, this kind of thing just isn’t tolerated. It’s an affront, a provocation, an invitation to violence. Someone would have to reply.
