In cafes across Cape Town, brewing the perfect cup of rooibos has become a fine art. Measuring just the right amount of tea is key while great care is needed to not allow the leaves to swirl for too long. Once ready, the rooibos cups, gleaming in a sumptuous deep red color, bring with them a reedy scent that greets the noses of the customers waiting to enjoy a sip. Grown only in South Africa's Western Cape province, the naturally caffeine-free tea used to be a specialist drink appealing to only some taste buds. They’re going to make a movie about this someday — maybe a happy one, maybe not. It’ll be incredibly corny, and you’ll love it. Or you’ll cry, maybe, if the happy ending gets screwed up. But you’ll watch because this is absolutely not the modern way. Read full article > >

While you're frying up some eggs and bacon, we're cooking up something else: a way to celebrate today's food holiday. Get your mini hotdogs in a row because April 24 is National Pigs in a Blanket Day ! Pigs in a blanket, that favorite party appetizer and the answer to “What can I bring?” everywhere, have become a simple American staple. A product of convenience cooking, these little pigs are as tasty as they are easy to make. The “pigs” can be anything from hot dogs to Vienna sausages to link or cocktail sausages and the “blanket” is often biscuit or croissant dough. Kids love this treat that's easy on the palate because it's like a baked corn dog, and party-goers like it as an appetizer because it's a classic finger food. But if you're considering pigs in a blanket for breakfast, that usually means sausage links wrapped in pancakes. In the U.K., pigs in a blanket are made a little bit differently. Cocktail sausages, different from the ones we get here in the U.S., are wrapped in bacon and served as a typical accompaniment to Christmas lunch. And across the world, there are variations on pigs in a blanket, sometimes leaning more towards the sausage roll side of things, because wrapping meat within dough or pastry has long been a satisfying substitute for a hot meal. So celebrate with your own variation, party or no party! If you want to jazz up the flavor with cheese but skip out on the questionable ingredients found in some hotdogs, try these cheesy pigs (or turkey dogs) in blankets . A little bit healthier and huge on flavor, this snack will give you a reason to celebrate.

The odds of being handed a free book out of the blue were much higher Monday night than any other night of the year, thanks to the legions of volunteers and booksellers celebrating World Book Night . The event, which began last year in England and added the United States and Ireland this year, aims to spread the love of books by giving away 500,000 free paperbacks to those who might not otherwise have access or resources, or to those who just look like they could use a good read. Rochelle Peachey, the founder of the dating site I Love Your Accent, is sitting alone in a restaurant, gabbing away on her cellphone, when a few minutes into the conversation, the phone she's talking into starts to ring. Busted! Such is the length Peachey once went to in order to battle the embarrassment and awkwardness she – and so many female business travelers like her – feels when dining alone. “I detest walking into a restaurant to request the dreaded table for one,” says Peachey, who typically makes three or four business trips a month. “When I walk into a restaurant or bar alone, I feel others see me as either a woman out to pick up men or a sad, lonely spinster.” A new website called Invite For a Bite aims to change all that. The site serves as a sort of meeting place where women who hate supping solo can post invites and make plans to dine together. Read – Hate dining solo? I take a back seat to no one when it comes to loving dogs. For that matter, my dog takes a back seat to no one. Ollie rides shotgun. Thus, the story of Seamus, the Romneys’ dog who famously rode atop the family car in a crate en route to vacation (to Ontario, Canada, 12 hours away) — and suffered acute gastrointestinal inconvenience, requiring a mid-trip hose-down — has caused me considerable distress. I know Mitt and Ann Romney to be lovely people who undoubtedly adored their dog, but how does one make this event seem less awful? Read full article > >
