Randall Craft first noticed Chris Layfield in the fall of 1994, when they began their freshman year at Georgetown University. Though the two lived in the same dorm and had a few mutual friends, they rarely spoke. Craft watched as Layfield danced to Madonna in the campus coffee shop and promoted the gay student group around campus. Meanwhile, Craft was hiding out in a dirty baseball hat, trying to date girls, and, he says, “making their lives unhappy.” But no one was more miserable about the situation than he was.
