Some students, parents left asking: What holiday?

Sunday, January 1st, 2012

Nevermind that it’s a federal holiday. And nevermind that the vast majority of Washington area schoolchildren will be snoozing late, savoring their last day of winter break. On Monday morning, a few students are headed to class. Schools opened their doors Jan. 2 in Alexandria and Howard, St. Mary’s and Charles counties, while elsewhere in the region — and in eight of the nation’s 10 largest school systems — students are free to enjoy the nation’s official celebration of New Year’s Day. 2011 in economic policy: The year of the aftershocks

Tuesday, December 27th, 2011

Technically, the financial crisis began in late 2008, with the collapse of Bear Stearns and Lehman Brothers. But 2009 was the year we really felt it. It was in 2009 that we lost more than 5 million jobs — the majority of the total job losses caused by the recession. By 2010, we seemed to turn the corner. The economy added more than a million jobs. Growth returned. The financial markets stabilized. Many forecasters looked to 2011 with real optimism. Read full article > >

Senate leaders say deal on spending, tax cut measures may come soon

Thursday, December 15th, 2011

Showing a new conciliatory tone, Senate leaders opened Congressional business Thursday by suggesting that a bipartisan compromise may come soon on a spending measure to keep the government running past Friday and a bill to extend a one-year cut in the payroll tax rate paid by 160 million workers. Senate Majority Leader Harry M. Reid (D-Nev.), who has been holding up a $1 trillion spending measure that would fund much of the government through next September, said he believes both issues can be resolved “in the next few days.” Read full article > >

Outcry over actress Veena Malik’s revealing FHM cover dominates Pakistani news

Monday, December 12th, 2011

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan — With just one magazine cover, a popular Pakistani actress has managed to offend her country’s conservative majority, spark cross-border controversies and trigger promises of an investigation from her country’s interior minister. Veena Malik achieved all this by posing for FHM India , a men’s magazine. On the cover of the magazine’s December issue, Malik appears nude — although her folded arms across her breasts partially preserve her modesty — with the acronym ISI tattooed on her arm. The tattoo is an obvious allusion to Pakistan’s notorious spy agency, which has been accused, among other nefarious acts, of being involved in the 2008 Mumbai attacks . Read full article > >

In Congress, partisanship is no longer something to hide

Thursday, December 8th, 2011

In a Congress crippled by partisan gridlock, each side is increasingly transparent about its political motivations. It used to be that the various press operations would spin and the leaders would at least pretend to lead. But in recent years, all pretense has fallen away. Last week, for example, when asked about the status of a jobs proposal, Senate Majority Leader Harry M. Reid (D-Nev.) came clean about the factors affecting his scheduling of votes — mainly the desire for media coverage. “We’re not going to do that at midnight tonight. We’re going to have the votes when you folks can write about it during a decent news cycle,” Reid told reporters on Thursday. Read full article > >
