Jeffrey Zients tapped to lead Office of Management and Budget

President Obama has tapped Jeffrey D. Zients to serve as acting director of the Office of Management and Budget, the White House announced Tuesday. This will be Zients’s second turn as acting director of the agency responsible for crafting the White House federal budget proposal and handling various government management concerns. Though Zients has no federal budget-writing experience, he led last year’s review of plans to reorganize federal agencies and the drafting of contingency plans ahead of last year’s threatened government shutdown . One thing about raising cattle — cows do what they are supposed to do when they are supposed to do it. Unfortunately, John W. Wendt, who works with his herd every day, can’t say the same thing about the Office of Personnel Management . Until almost a year ago, Wendt also labored for Uncle Sam. The retired federal employee now works on his cattle and grain farm in Ledger, Mont., a sparsely populated place about 50 miles south of the Canadian border. He put in 16 years with the government before retiring as a heavy equipment operator from Interior’s Bureau of Reclamation last December. Read full article > >

“What keeps you up at night?” is a standard question asked by management consultants. What if we asked that same question of the campaign managers of the leading candidates in the presidential race? How might they respond? I tried to put myself in their shoes, or rather, in their sheets. Mitt Romney’s team might toss and turn over today’s Union Leader endorsement of Newt Gingrich . The paper usually takes one of two paths; it either endorses strongly or all-out.  In the latter scenario, it has been known to run daily front-page editorials trashing their candidate’s opponents — essentially becoming a communications arm of their favored candidate’s campaign. From the tone of their endorsement, I would bet on shock and awe for Romney from New Hampshire’s leading newspaper. Read full article > >
