NEW YORK — One of the world’s largest Apple stores is opening at the landmark Grand Central Terminal. The 23,000-square-foot personal electronics business will start selling to the public on Friday. The owner of the space, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, which runs the city’s bus and subway system, says Apple Inc. is paying $180 per square foot for its lease — slightly less than the $200-per-square-foot top rate at the century-old Manhattan train hub. NBA officials and player representatives met Wednesday afternoon in New York and talked until about 1 a.m. Thursday, but walked out of a Manhattan hotel after 12 hours of negotiations without an agreement and no indication that a deal was close at hand. The sides agreed to resume talks at noon Thursday. NBA Players Association president Derek Fisher cautioned that “we can’t say there was significant progress made.” Both declined to provide details of the discussions. Read full article > >

“What would Jesus think of Occupy Wall Street ?” I asked myself this week as I wandered the makeshift, blue-tarp village in Manhattan’s Zuccotti Park . Born with little means into a first-century world, the historical Jesus might feel right at home with the very aspects of the occupation that so many 21st-century observers consider gross: the tents, the damp sleeping bags, the communal kitchen. Jesus would have sympathy, I think, with the campers’ efforts to keep a small space sanitary in the absence of modern plumbing. Read full article > >

Billy Hunter is the biggest wishbone in pro sports right now. When the NBA union chief walks into a boardroom at a Manhattan hotel Thursday , with only the beginning of the season in the balance, Commissioner David Stern will be tugging on one lapel. NBA players, who will soon start missing paychecks because of their economic stalemate with team owners, will be tugging at the other. Read full article > >

Imagine that the twin towers still dominated the Manhattan skyline. Imagine that the Pentagon’s western facade had remained intact. Imagine that there was no reason to build a memorial in Shanksville, Pa. And imagine that the numbers 9 and 11 meant nothing more than an emergency telephone call. The world changed on Sept. 11, 2001, that much is clear. But how much, and how radically? Read full article > >
