Cameron International, the maker of the blowout preventer that failed to stop the massive oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico last year, has agreed to pay $250 million to BP, which says it will put the money into the $20 billion escrow fund to settle claims related to the disaster. Cameron said its insurers would pay $170 million of the $250 million sum. BP would indemnify Cameron from claims related to the Oil Pollution Act and environmental damage, but not against fines, penalties or certain other types of claims. Read full article > >

GENEVA — Researchers hunting for an elusive sub-atomic particle believed to be a basic building block of the universe announced Tuesday that they have narrowed down the search thanks to the latest data. The Higgs boson — popularly referred to as the “God particle” — is more likely to be found in the lower mass or energy ranges of the massive atom smasher being used to track it down, researchers from two independent teams said. The retail industry launched a new campaign Wednesday to protect a federal law that reduces the fees retailers must pay to banks every time a debit card is swiped, a move the industry hopes will blunt the massive lobbying attack from banks. The campaign calls for hundreds of merchants to flood Capitol Hill in June for meetings with key lawmakers, the third “fly-in” to be held this year on the issue. It also includes print and radio ads in Washington and six to 12 key states, along with viral video clips. Industry executives say they expect the campaign to generate several thousand comments to lawmakers before the regulations on swipe fees, also known as interchange, take effect this summer. If the steady release of promotional character posters weren’t an indication that the Warner Bros. Sucker Punch machine is kicking into high gear, we now have a second animated short from Deathly Hallows animator Ben Hoblin, titled “Dragon.” Warner Bros. released this synopsis for the short: “In Sucker Punch, the girls drop into a castle courtyard and find themselves in the middle of a chaotic battle between a hoard of gruesome Orcs and an army of Black Knights. The original cause of the massive conflict is hopelessly lost amidst the death and destruction. ‘Dragon’ is a tale of religious persecution exploring the origin of this conflict. Who is the righteous and who is the heathen?”
